Here it is folks, this is it, the rest of the Section 1 softball finals are here. We had a wild one yesterday didn’t we? Congratulations to Tuckahoe. Here’s how I see today going:
Class B: No. 2 Rye Neck vs. No. 1 Valhalla, 9 a.m.: Deja vu? In a rematch of last year’s finals, Rye Neck comes into this game with the edge pitching with Diana King. But Valhalla comes into this game with the deepest lineup led by Brandi Coon. Usually good pitching will beat good hitting so I see this game being close. Prediction: Valhalla 3, Rye Neck 2. Next up: The winner gets the Section 9 Champion Thursday in the regional semifinals.
Class AA: No. 2 North Rockland vs. No. 1 Clarkstown South, noon: This will be a classic Rockland battle. This has been a special year for both of these teams. North Rockland’s got a deep formidable lineup led by Alicia Bertolino and Amanda Schweitzer. However, Sara Herskowitz is the best hitter in Rockland. The Vikings lineup is formidable 1-9. As far as the pitching matchup goes, I give the edge to Briana Keaveney, but ever so slight because Kayla McDermott is a great pitcher too. Prediction: Clarkstown South 5, North Rockland 4, 9. Next up: The winner gets the Section 9 champion Thursday in the regional semifinals.
Class A: No. 2 Pearl River vs. No. 1 Brewster, 3 p.m.: This rematch of last year’s finals will be a ‘Battle Royale’. Brewster led for most of that game before Pearl River won it late. The thing though with this game is the pressure is on Brewster. They are riding an undefeated season. The Bears have a strong lineup and showed it yesterday against Lakeland as well as two strong pitchers. The Pirates have the best outfield in the section. This game I do believe will come down to the wire again. Prediction: Brewster 4, Pearl River 3. Next up: The winner gets the Section 9 champion Thursday in the regional semifinals.
Remember, none of these picks are a slight on the other team. This is just how I see this playing out. Good luck to everyone.
