We are down to the Section 1 softball quarterfinals people. The fun times are about to begin. Here’s how I see things going down:
No. 8 Arlington at No. 1 Clarskstown South, 11 a.m.: This game is intriguing and there’s a lot of talent on both sides. Clearly after putting up 15 runs on Scarsdale, the Admirals can flat out hit the ball. But what the first round game also proved with the Raiders posting a 12 spot is they are vulnerable to being scored on and the Vikings will take advantage of that. Prediction: Clarkstown South 9, Arlington 3. Next up: The winner will face No. 5 Ketcham/No. 4 Ursuline Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 7 Saunders at No. 2 North Rockland, 11 a.m.: This is a Saunders squad that is better than a lot of people are giving them credit for. The Blue Devils showed they could flat out hit and proved in the last round. But this time, they’re traveling to Rockland County to face North Rockland. It’s a bit scary how good they are. This game will not be a blow out in my opinion. Prediction: North Rockland 9, Saunders 5. Next up: The winner will face No. 6 Suffern/No. 3 John Jay-East Fishkill Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 6 Suffern at No. 3 John Jay-East Fishkill, 11 a.m.: What I like a lot about this game is that this is a Suffern squad that is scrappy and will compete. This will not be an easy game for the Patriots at all. These two teams will hit the ball and well, this will come down to the pitchers. Prediction: John Jay-East Fishkill 5, Suffern 3. Next up: The winner will face No. 7 Saunders/No. 2 North Rockland Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 5 Ketcham at No. 4 Ursuline, 11 a.m.: To me, this will be the game of the day in Class AA. These are two high powered offenses with solid pitching. This game could be a high scoring but it could also be a straight up pitchers dual, I know you can say that about every game in this tournament but these are two very evenly matched teams. Prediction: Ketcham 7, Ursuline 6, 8. Next up: The winner will face No. 8 Arlington/No. 1 Ursuline Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 8 Harrison at No. 1 Brewster, noon: Harrison showed their offensive prowess in the first round of the tournament with the 10 runs they posted against Tappan Zee. They have a bunch of solid pitchers. I just think there will be a bit too much Brewster for this team to handle but I do really like the Huskies to make a game of this and throw a little bit of scare into the perfect season. Prediction: Brewster 7, Harrison 4. Next up: The winner will face No. 5 Hen Hud/No. 4 Lakeland Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 7 Nanuet at No. 2 Pearl River, noon: This is going to be “A Battle Royale” for sure and potential game of the day in Class A. This league rivalry is always fierce and a rematch of a 1-0 game in the quarterfinals from last year. The Pirates have a lot of experience and talent up and down the lineup. They always just seem to re-stack the deck after graduation BUT don’t count the Golden Knights out of this game. I just think the seniors on the Pirates will prove to be just a little too much. Prediction: Pearl River 1, Nanuet 0, 9. Next up: The winner will face No. 11 Yorktown/No. 3 John Jay Thursday in the quarterfinals.
No. 5 Hen Hud at No. 4 Lakeland, 12:30 p.m.: This to me is the other potential game of the day in Class A. These two teams have a lot of firepower on offense. It’s really going to come down to the pitching but I think that Hen Hud’s going to take this one. Prediction: Hen Hud 5, Lakeland 4. Next up: The winner will face No. 8 Harrison/No. 1 Brewster Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 11 Yorktown at No. 3 John Jay, 4 p.m.: It’s nice to see the ‘Huskers get out of the first round. In actuality, this team could be this year’s “Cinderella” story. But this has been a pretty specially season for the Indians so far and I don’t see them exiting the tournament yet. Prediction: John Jay 7, Yorktown 5. Next up: The winner will face No. 7 Nanuet/No. 2 Pearl River Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 9 Putnam Valley at No. 1 Valhalla, 10 a.m.: The Tigers got their first section one win in four years. They’ve proved they can hit all year. However, they are running to a juggernaut in Valhalla. Prediction: Valhalla 9, Putnam Valley 5. Next up: The winner will face No. 5 Ardsley/No. 4 Pawling Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 7 Dobbs Ferry at No. 2 Rye Neck, 11 a.m.: This is a rematch game from five years ago in the Class B finals. The Eagles have been trying to get back to the top of the “food chain” so to speak but Rye Neck’s a real good team. Diana King will prove to be a little too much Dobbs Ferry. Prediction: Rye Neck 7, Dobbs Ferry 4. Next up: The winner will face No. 6 Westlake/No. 3 North Salem Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 6 Westlake at No. 3 North Salem, 11 a.m.: Westlake has been solid all year and this game will be close. I just think North Salem’s been a good squad all year and I believe they will be in the semifinals. This could the game of the day in Class B. Prediction: North Salem 4, Westlake 3. Next up: The winner will face No. 7 Dobbs Ferry/No. 2 Rye Neck Thursday in the semifinals.
No. 5 Ardsley at No. 4 Pawling, 3 p.m.: Pawling’s a good team, but Ardsley up and down is a great team. I’m not afraid to say it, the Panthers shouldn’t have been the five seed. Raina Gorman will take over this game. This will be a low scoring game. Prediction: Ardsley 2, Pawling 1. Next up: The winner will face No. 9 Putnam Valley/No. 1 Valhalla Thursday in the semifinals.
