NANUET — Following his 400th career win Tuesday, Nanuet coach Tony Toronto brought his team out into right field for a traditional postgame discussion. But as the sun shone on his wide-eyed smile, Toronto, hands on hips, could not immediately find the words he was looking for.
After a few seconds, the silence broke.
“Could you tell I was on edge today?” he asked the team, which chuckled and obliged after a 6-2 win over Tappan Zee. “Thank you, ladies.”
Holding the game ball in his right hand, Toronto lifted it up and told the girls that he wanted them to sign it Wednesday.
Toronto’s 30-year varsity coaching career includes a 22-year stint at North Rockland before spending his last eight years at Nanuet. Toronto joins an elite list of coaches that includes Rye Neck’s Joan Spedafino, who recently took over the Section 1 wins record (447), and retired Eastchester coach Skip Walsh, whose 446 wins stood since his departure in 2008.
“I’m in pretty good company now,” he said, grinning. “I look in the state record book and I just look at the names — guys who were unbelievable names — now, maybe I’ll inch my way up.”
Toronto said that he has “an idea” of when he will retire from coaching, but did not want to disclose a time frame.
He did, however, offer one bit of information.
“I don’t have as many years left as I put in, I’ll just say that,” he joked.
