When I selected Colleen McCoy as the season’s first player of the week, she hit .733 with three homers during a full week of games and I thought it would nearly impossible to top that the rest of the season. Clearly, I was wrong.
During the Pirates’ perfect 5-0 week, the power-hitting McCoy went 13-for-16 (.812) with two homers, four extra-base hits, 12 RBI and safely reached base in all but one of her 19 at-bats. McCoy also crossed the plate nine times (nine times? NINE times). In arguably her most impressive feat of the week, the junior hit for the cycle against Nyack.
It is the only recorded cycle that I’ve seen this season.
Here’s a look at some of the honorable mentions from this week, sorted in alphabetical order:
• Gabby Caruso, Jr., Hen Hud: HR, 5 RBI, 3 2B; 26.0 IP, 3 BB, 33 K, 4-1 W/L
• Kaylie Dymek, Jr., Valhalla: MVP of the James “Ace” Morabito tournament in Herkimer
• Nicole Rosner, So., Brewster: Tossed a one-hitter against Horace Greeley in her first varsity CG.
• Nicole Spiegelberg, Jr., Tappan Zee: 8-10 (.800), 4 RBI, 3B, 2B, 3 BB, 5 R
The Journal News will select a winner every Sunday, counting all stats from games played Monday through that Saturday.
