PEARL RIVER — Pearl River sophomore Emily Turilli tossed a perfect game Monday, filling up a good amount of the void left by all-state pitcher Mandy McCarthy. Turilli fanned nine batters in her 11-0 perfecto against Eastchester.
The Pirates broke the game open with a seven-run second inning, then cruised for the remainder of the game. Colleen McCoy plated three runs, including a two-run rope down the third-base line in the second. Caroline Alicandri also had a two-run single in the second.
McCoy ended the scoring barrage with a sacrifice fly to right in the bottom of the fifth.
Turilli, nor the rest of the team, was completely unaware of the perfect game. It wasn’t until Pirates coach Chris Woolgar gathered the team after the game that they found out about the sophomore hurler’s sensational performance. The Eagles mustered just one hit out of the infield Monday.
Before it was set in stone that Turilli would be the ace this season, one question surrounding the move was how she would would jell with catcher Erin Brown.
If Monday was any indication, the chemistry is just fine.
