Here’s our scouting report on the state softball semifinals (predictions will be written tomorrow)
Class A state semifinals
Pearl River (23-3) vs. Section 11’s Sayville (21-3)
When: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: Moreau Recreation Park, South Glens Falls
Key players:Pearl River — Sam Alicandri, Sr., SS; Mandy McCarthy, Sr., P; Erin Woods, Sr., 2B; Dee O’Malley, Sr., C; Emily Turilli, Fr., DP/CF. Sayville — Kristen Bricker, Sr., 1B; Jessica Griffin, Jr., CF; Oliva Kaczmarek, Jr., C; Julia Simpson, Sr., P; Allie Petillo, Jr., P.
Outlook: This is Pearl River’s first appearance in the state final four since 2010, when the Pirates won the title. The Golden Flashes were last year’s state runner-up and are two years removed from the championship. Both teams have rallied from behind in this year’s playoffs. The Pirates recorded extra-inning regional wins over Section 4’s Maine-Endwell and Section 9’s Marlboro. Sayville has an edge in terms of state-pressure experience, with most of its team back from last year. Coach Tiffany Rowan will decide before the game whether to start the lefty Julia Simpson or righty Allie Petillo. Kristen Bricker is a long-ball threat but, as shown in their 5-4 regional final win over Section 8’s Carey, the Golden Flashes can play small ball. One of the keys to the game will be defense, and that’s been stellar for the Pirates, highlighted by the outfield of Kirsten McGarvey, Jules Madigan and Julie Marisco. The Pirates have a solid order top to bottom, led by shortstop Sam Alicandri and Emily Turilli.
