Joe B – What are your personal/professional thoughts on this year’s State Gatorade Player of the Year, Kristen Brown of MacArthur High School from Section 8 on Long Island. Should she have gotten it, say over the Shortstop from Clarence High School out of Section 6 or say the Pitcher from Chatham High School from Section 2? Both of those players helped lead their respective teams to State Titles this year. Can’t wait to hear what you have to say about this one?

Hallie, I only know the one player that you mentioned..here is my take
I have seen Kristin play gold travel for a few years. great impact player-Not only is she a success on the HS level , an A student, but goes toe to toe with the gold cali teams when playing against them. here is a blurb on espn about her
“Athletic achievement: Brown led the Generals to a 20-4 record entering the Class AA Long Island Championship Game against East Islip, scheduled for June 5. She owned a .564 batting average with 14 home runs and 42 RBI at the plate, and an 8-3 record with a 2.27 ERA in the circle through 24 games. Brown is a two-time First Team All-Long Island selection and was a Second Team All-State honoree as a junior.”
She will be playing at UNC next year.
here’s the gatorade criteria- I’m sure you know this, but for those who don’t:
“The Gatorade State Player of the Year for State- award winners are evaluated and selected on the basis of three criteria: Athletic Achievement — success made at the club, national or international levels of competition, and standout performances in their respective sport. Includes statistical production, honors, skill-set evaluation, leadership ability, overall impact on team success and historical context of accomplishments. Academic Excellence — review of GPA and class rank, as well as SAT and ACT scores, academic honors and distinctions. Exemplary Character — overall sportsmanship, but also membership and participation in positive activities that demonstrate commitment to character and community.”

4theluvofsball. Absolutely agree that based upon the information that you mention, that she qualifies (and then some) for consideration for the Gatorade State Player of the Year Award. Gatorade has amended their qualifications to refer to “Athletic Achievement — success made at the club, national or international levels of competition”. Now given this, people need to understand that this award is “NOT” a State High School Interscholastic Award, but rather an award (both Academic and Athletic) that strongly considers Club and Travel Softball. Bottom line is (and this is what I was saying back years ago, when the criteria was no so “clear” was that this award was not solely a High School Athletic Award. Thus, everyone needs to know that the State High School Softball Players of the Year is the recognition for players during the High School Season, where the Gatorade State POY is NOT.

Hallie, I haven’t seen any of them play. However I did see Cassie & Tammy in their senior years and felt both were worthy recipients of the award. However if somebody else won it in those years I would not have been upset about it. There are always several players worthy of the award, but there is only one award and there is a selection process.

Yes, the NY All State team is I think selected by the NYS sports writers assoc and Gatorade players by an independent panel. Congrats in advance to all the section selections, state selections and gatorade nominees ..

PS, Im from Section I and follow Section I in the Lower Hudson Valley. I have no concern about what goes on in other Sections. I don’t claim to know everything about NYS softball like some others do. I don’t make predictions or criticize teams or players for their actions. There are roughly a dozen people who follow these blogs fairly regular. Sometime we all think we know everything. But that’s personal opinions and everybody is entitled to theirs. I’m just surprised that you didn’t mention anything about going 1-10 in the regionals and finals.

sure did mention it joe b (see Valhalla blog). Yep, did not do too well in Regionals and Final 4. Like I said in my blog post (again see Valhalla blog), the predictions that I, Debbie and others do, is solely for fun and that only the only thing that really counts is what goes on between the white lines on the field. Remember, its all about having fun (PS – Don’t believe that anyone has ever ever come on this blog claiming to be an expert on everything in the state. If they were and were dead on accurate, then they should play the lottery immediately. Remember, its all about having fun).
