Calvini is the real deal!
PinheadLarry,
Agree, Ms. Calvini is having a great year for Rye Neck!
Is dobbs still on your schedule? I would like to see that game.
Look at the WP/Gorton score! No disrespect to Gorton but this game should not be on their schedule. No winners here!
This is exactly the problem with the schedule that KoalaFan was chatting about earlier this week. The better teams don’t get a chance to play non-league games against better competition.
Debbie, how do you fix this issue for next year?
Good Mornng Everyone – Here is my Wednesday Report – #1) First, to my blog friend, Smartchoice: If you look at White Plains’ league it is (in my opinion) split into 3 groups. The Top Tier is White Plains, Scarsdale and Ursuline. Then you have 2 teams in the Middle in New Rochelle and Mamoroneck (separated in the middle because I feel that cannot beat the Top 3 but are far superior than the bottom), then you have Gorton, Lincoln and Saunders. This is really sad because back in the EARLY 1980’s, the Old Yonkers City League was one of the Top Softball Conferences in the Section with Roosevelt and Lincoln being at the Top 5 in the Section for Large Schools. Maybe the Old Yonkers City League needs to be re-established (Yonkers, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Saunders, and Gorton). However, I don’t foresee that happening anytime soon. # 2) Rye Neck is having a nice year indeed. Coach Joan Spedafino is up there in the same ranks as Coach O’Donnell and Coach Marino, as some of the Top HS Softball Coaches in our area. #3) Here is my weekly State Report. Last weeks # 1 State Class AA Team – Tottenville HS out of the PSAL (Staten Island) got “BEAT UP” by unranked Bishop Lunden out of the Syracuse Area. Tottenville has one of the Top 5 Pitchers in the State, but is not a # 1 Class AA Team in my opinion. It now appears as Coach McGowan and his “2 A Day Practice” Bay Shore HS Team will get the # 1 slot in Class AA. Horseheads out of Section 4 (and a team that North Rockland might see in their Quarterfinal Game at the Morabito) is still undefeated and appears to be moving into the #2 slot. A really great game was played yesterday up in Section 6 (Western New York) between Undefeated Clarence (#7 in Class AA) and their League Rival and Undefeated Williamsville North HS (# 11 in Class AA) played at Clarence HS, with the home team coming away with a 2-1 win. Both pitchers threw 1 hitters and both pitchers striking out over 10 batters each. (Scarsdale might see Williamsville North in their 2nd game at the Morabito).
Hallie, You are a wealth of information. God bless you.
Maybe in Class AA they should make an All-Yonkers conference? I think they did that for football? This would solve the problem at the upper and lower end of the spectrum. In addition, the top two teams in class A from the prior year could move up to the Class AA conference. So let’s say, P.R. and Harrison are in the section 1 final, they would move up to Class AA the following year.etc..
Feedback from the blog-nation please?
The leagues are not based on class, it was supposed to be by Geography to save $$$ on transportation.
Several different set-ups could have taken place that would allow for much more similar sized leagues was my point. Allowing all teams in all leagues to have a similar number of assigned games and a similar number of open ones to schedule the add-in non conference ones.
Just for the sake of argument Mamaroneck could have played in the league that Harrison and Rye are in, which would increase the size of that league. There are several other examples I could provide of this nature, but I do not work for Section 1.
My intent was not to initiate a dialogue of what teams do not belong based on their ability. It was only just a few years ago that Ursuline was being run-ruled by practically everyone.
Due to our assigned schedule being so large this year, we were unable to participate in a really great out-of state tournament. We would have gone over the 20 game limit if we had. It just would have been nice to have the option of more than 4 games to add-in, like mostly all the other leagues in the section got.
Geez – Another VC Chat Baseball Show tonight? Where is the equity? We want a VC Chat Softball Show !!!! Debbie – Can you help us all out???
smartchoice…..W.P. is not the only one beating the Yonkers teams by big scores. Lauren Sputo pitched 3 inns(came out of game)and Emily Frawley pitched 2 inns. All of W.P. roster played in game. From a softball perspective it was not a fun game to watch for either team. The score is not indicative of W.P. running up the score. They did not. It just ended up the way it did. I agree something needs to be done.
Slapper… It must have been very painful for all involved to watch/play that game yesterday. Hopefully the “powers that be” can rectify this problem by next year.
I vote Hallie and KF put together a plan and forward it to section 1 adminstration. I trust/know they could do a better job then what is out there now.
A little surprised Coach O’Donnell even pitched his #1 yesterday… were you?
Mr. Pinhead, Has RyeNeck beat anyone with a better than 500 record. When teams play real deal teams they are the real deal. I would love to see them RN tested and im sure they would do just fine.
TigerPop
RN’s #1 pitcher had a very big season last year and is continuing her excellence this year. Unfortunately RN lost a few key players from last years team. I saw her play last year and she has a presence on the mound and at the plate.
IMO it’s unfair to judge both under the same light.
To Debbie, Smartchoice and others: I doubt very much if the powers to be within Section 1 would consider realligning the leagues just for softball. As it relates to the defunct Yonkers City League, you have teams in Yonkers that are within different enrollment classifications (Roosevelt for example now plays in the same league as Bronxville which in my opinion is absurd). I don’t believe, because of just that, that the Section 1 Committee would put them all in the same league (although is definately would make sense, specifically for Softball). Think about it. Having a Yonkers City League with Roosevelt, Lincoln, Gorton, Yonkers and Saunders would have a legitimate shot at capturing their league title, which would provide a sense of pride with each of those teams. Then teams like White Plains, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Scarsdale, Ursuline and Mamaroneck could all play in the same league. Then when sectionals comes around, you would play in the classification based upon your enrollment numbers. How you would seed it is another guess (would you award stronger points for winning your league?) I guess it makes too much sense for it to become a reality.
I would be interested in hearing what Debbie and my fellow bloggers have to say about this.
Hallie…
I love the idea of a Yonkers City League. Makes so much sense that it will never happen. I would like to see league games played at the start of the season and end of the season… so the first 4-5 games and the last 4-5 games are in league. This insures teams will have to play the full schedule hard, instead of sitting key players like the Colts (NFL team) did at the end of their season. I would also like to see the league winner get a first round bye (to reward them). After that its best team moves on!
Congratulations Jess, all your hard work continues to pay off!!
smartchoice….........My answer is no. The other teams in their league (Scarsdale ,Ursuline, etc.) have split pitching time between their #1 and #2 pitchers(if they have a #3) when playing against the teams from Yonkers and Mt.Vernon.Don’t see where you are going with this. There is no problem with any of these teams giving their #1 pitcher a couple of inns in these games. Coaches would be doing their #1 pitcher a diservice by not letting them pitch or hit at all in any of these games. We are talking about 8 games out of 20 in the regular season. I mean no disrespect to the teams from Yonkers or Mt. Vernon they do try. They just play at a different level than do the other teams in our league.Think about it.
I was told that the yonkers schools combind all boys lax players to make one competitive team is that an option for softball.
slapper,
Not going anywhere! I ask the question simple because of the injury scare earlier this month to #1. I believe Hallie mentioned back then that WP had a “soft spot” in their schedule that would allow WP to rest #1. Hey, IMO if nothing is wrong with her then I say pitcher. But if she still has some issues regarding the injury then it only makes sense IMO to rest her on lesser competition,ie. Gorton. IMO… What do you think?
smartchoice…... respond on the right blog. This post was for the new state rankings that Hallie put out. Alot of teams have “soft spots” in their schedules, not just W.P.. You did not answer the question “White Plains 22 give me a break”. You are one of those people who changes their name or uses multiple names every softball season on these blogs to try and hide and bash teams and coaches. You remind me of someone I know in real life. You have an agenda against W.P., and have for a few years now. Your are just using a new name this year to attack W.P…....Again! P.S. What high school team does your daughter play for?
Slapper… sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about! You need to take this up with tiger POP…
stop being so defensive all the time.
My Guess is Ursuline all tha way .I’ve seen all three of these teams play this year and although WP and Scars. Are strong contenders save your stress level it’s going down just like that.
