His contract was not renewed and there is an uproar within Suffern over it.

I do not have any knowledge of what exactly took place behind closed doors (all school personnel matters are handled behind closed doors and decissions are not open to the public), so I can’t comment specifically on what happened to Coach Lloyd. It may be because someone who works within the Suffern School District has, by Union Contract, rights to get a Coaching Job over someone from outside of the school district (provided the individual has successfully taken and passed all of the Coaching Classes and Tests required). Coach Lloyd had great success while coaching at Tuxedo High School in Section 9 before coming over to Suffern. Politics and Parent Involvement also comes into play when it comes to hiring and re-hiring coaches. I am certain that Coach Lloyd will land on his feet and get another coaching opportunity at another school, and might be able to coach against his old team, Suffern, and well might outcoach Suffern and win a game. Sometimes, in Coaching as in Life, “Its not what you know, but who you know”
In case you need a shot of Softball, there is the Knights of Columbus Fastpitch Softball tournament this weekend in the Orangetown area. Rockland County’s premier travel softball team, Rockland Thunder 18U, will be playing this Saturday on 12:00 and 4:00 at Pearl River High School, and again at 6:00 at Pearl River Middle School. This team features Pearl River’s Krystina Poloni, North Rockland’s Samantha Welsh, Tappan Zee’s Kayla Meyer and Tayla Gardner, and former Pearl River standout, Jackie Bruno, who now plays for Cortland State, as well as former Tappan Zee standout, Brittni Alexander. Great softball on tap for the weekend!
So let me get this straight Deb, some of the Suffern Board of Education members’ daughters were either on the Suffern varsity softball. These board members were angry that their respective daughters did not get enough playing time so they led a witch hunt to relieve Coach Lloyd of his position? It figures. What happened to the time when parents came to games, cheered their children on and let the coaches coach? Those days are now long gone. When a player is not treated like a star player parents, who think they know it all, whine and complain to the school board. Great example these parents are setting for their children.
Also, why is it that the baord members who have daughters on the team were allowed in on the vote? That is a direct conflict of interest.
It is terrible that this has happened to Coach Lloyd.
Earlier in the season, I commented on the guest blog of Suffern player Julie Jefferson. He did a terrific job with his team. They did so many good things in the game we played against them. Especially, after losing his number one pitcher to graduation last year. Most schools and coaches have found themselves faced with a rough year after losing a star player. Look at JJCR this year with no Gaby Torzilli. Look at New Rochelle HS last year, after Jillian Schonberg graduated. It is not an easy task to re-build immediately the following season.
The reasons for his non rehire in the article are ridiculous. There are numerous coaches who are running travel teams in the summer with some/many/all of their varsity players on the team. It is horrible that the school board did this. It does sound like payback. Nothing surprises me anymore.
If they hire a new coach, he or she will have the burden of knowing that if certain players don’t play they too will risk loosing their job. Softball isn’t the only sport that goes through this. And as long as board members with children who play sports are allowed to vote on these matters more and more coaches will be dismissed. Let the coaches coach and the players who should play play. If someone is not playing, don’t blame the coach. They wants to win and will play the players that will help them win. And if a coach is willing to give up his free time to coach a travel team during the summer consider yourself lucky. Because some of these coaches stop everything once the final out is made.
Every single player who came out and supported the reinstatement of Coach Lloyd should be commended for their actions and maturity. It takes a very mature and well spoken individual to go up against a School Board to fight for what they believe in their hearts is right. Shame on those members of the School Board who used their power on the board as a vendetta against the coach. They should have obstained when asked for their vote, given the personal connection with the team (their daughters either play or have played for Coach Lloyd). And many wonder why people don’t go into Teaching or Coaching as a profession. Because too many self-serving egotists like those on the Suffern School Board are out their just to feed their own egos and pockets
