Debbie – I certainly hope that you, Tony Toronto and the other Section 1 Conference Chairpeople PUSH to get a number of Section 1 “All Section” selections, nominiated to the All State Team. Samantha Welch from North Rockland is deserant of First Team All State. PS – I will make this comment again – How does North Rockland go from # 1 in the State in Class AA to # 7 in the State in Class AA, after losing to the eventual State Class AA Champion – Brentwood? I understand that those paid “HS Softball Newspaper Beat Writers” members of the NYSSWA, in good standing, are among those within the NYSSWA who are eligble to vote on the State Rankings (one has to remember that not everyone who pays a “Subsciption” to the NYSSWA is eligible to vote) met after the State Finals to discuss the final poll/rankings and I could possibly understand being dropped to say # 4, but I cannot understand why they dropped so far. Could it be that the members of the NYSSWA who watched North Rockland play on Saturday were not impressed with them? Pearl River only dropped to # 2 after losing to Floral Park in the finals. Debbie, as a sportswriter covering Section 1, where was your say in the matter? (Or do we have the same situation as we did last year, with Tony P, where neither Tony nor Debbie are members of the NYSSWA and did not nor do not have a vote in the polls?) If this is true, then this is sad that the Journal News cannot have their HS Softball Reporters as members of the NYSSWA (I believe that Kevin Delaney is a member of the NYSSWA for HS Basketball). In my opinion, Debbie needs to be there for Section 1 to support our teams as other Section Newspaper Sportswriters are there to support their teams/players as it relates to State Rankings and All State Selections. WHY ??????????? Here are the final state rankings for everyone to see.

Hallie,
Possible explanation for the reason to your question. If you break down the top 7: Tottenville was undefeated and won the NYPSAL crown over number 9 Madison who’s only loss was to Tottenville in their state championship. You know the PSAL is not in NYSPHSAA.
As I have stated in the past, I don’t think the PSAL is anywhere close to the level of play as in ours but, that is probably the explanation for that.
#3 Long Beach played a tougher schedule and lost in the regional to Brentwood, so that explains that.
Fairport lost to Brentwood in the state final so that explains that. Columbia played a tougher schedule and lost to Fairport in the state semi’s. And St. John the Baptist won the NY State championship of the CHSAA. This is probably why these teams all finished ahead of North Rockland. I don’t think the association was unimpressed by any means.
Remember I said last year that the LI teams have far surpassed the upstate dynasties of your time, who no longer deserve the bias of the NYSSWA but still seem to get it? They have and I think you would have to agree with me now.
1. Brentwood-11 24-4 6.
2. Tottenville-PSAL 29-0 2.
3. Long Beach-8 20-6 9.
4. Fairport-5 25-3 3.
5. Columbia-2 20-7 8.
6. St. John the Baptist-CHSAA 27-2 4.
7. North Rockland-1 24-2 1.
Glad to see Ursuline made the final rankings although they still have our final record wrong which was actually 18-6 not 15-5.
Yes, Koala Fan, you are indeed correct. The Long Island Sections (Sections 8 and 11 and the CHSAA schools) have been the superior softball sections in the state over the past 6 to 7 years, in the Class AA’s and A’s. Look at Bay Shore, Long Branch, etc, etc. It used to be Section 4 and possibly Section 2 (Susquehanna Valley, Shenendehowa, etc, etc), but I agree that the Long Island Sections have pulled ahead (But for Class D, it is still Section 4, with Afton being the most dominant High School ever in the History of HS Softball). I also agree that the quality of the PSAL Softball in comparison to the NYSPHSAA is not the same. INTERESTING POINT THAT YOU MADE about Long Branch and Columbia played a tougher schedule than North Rockland during the regular season. I would love to see both North Rockland and Ursuline go up and play in the Morabito Tournament next year (along with Columbia out of Section 2). This way these 2 teams will be able to get the exposure that will help them. Your thoughts?
I am sure Ursuline would go to Morabito, if they were invited. They went to Zimbalatti three years ago.
They take trips and play games that count against tough out of state competition every year. Now with the 20 game schedule, it would be easier to play NY opponents that would count, so that makes sense. I guess time will tell.
A Spring training trip to Florida in early April with training and scrimmages is in the works. So if history repeats itself, they should have 4 open games to schedule.
I would certainly enjoy seeing Urusline there too. Imagine this field of 16. Urusline, North Rockland, Columbia, Chenango Valley, Williamsville North, Webster Schroeder, Binghamton, Horseheads, Brewster, Victor, Mechanicville, John Jay (EF), Minisink Valley, Rhinebeck, Cicero North Syracuse, and Baldwinsville. That would be some field of 16
Debbie – Your thoughts on this for next year?
It all depends on who’s invited. Would it be nice to see more section 1 teams at the Moarbito tournament; sure it would but it depends on who is invited and who is available.
....and rules could change again before that time with NYSPHSAA. I think they are voting on some more things before next year that could change many things for many teams.
Sorry Debbie I must correct you
Tonight’s Section 1 Softball Dinner is at
Windows on the Hudson on Livingston Ave. in Dobbs Ferry at 6:30
If the NYSPHSAA invokes the 20 game rule for next year (from 24) and only allows travel to “neighboring states” (Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey) for both scrimmages and games, then those trips to Florida and North Carolina would be out as well as playing in such tournaments as the Morabito and Mudville, unless a team was willing to give 2 or 4 of their non league games up for play in these tournaments. Otherwise, the limitations would be hard to deal with. If invited, I certainly hope that Ursuline and North Rockland would give the 4 games needed.
Koala fan,
Tony Toronto told me over the weekend at states that the location was moved from what you said to where I said at the beginning of the post.
Unless it was changed again….
Thanks Debbie. It was moved. We did not know. Apparently it was changed on Friday. Ursuline finished school a week ago so, maybe there was nobody there to get the message.
The site of the All-Section Dinner has been changed to:
my e-mail from Coach Shaw sent yesterday….dinner location changed to
The Westchester Manor Restaurant
140 Saw Mill River Road
Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
Date and time remain the same: Tuesday 6/16 at 6:30
See you there,
Coach Shaw
Thank you also, pick’r off. The old place said there will be somebody there to give out directions to people who show up there that don’t know that it got moved.
koala fan….......Talk about changes. I heard section 1 is restructuring the leagues next season. hotdog37…..there was a 20 game rule this year. There is some good softball in the states you mentioned. We played scrimmages against some good CT high school teams this spring in addition to playing at mudville.
slapper – what team did you play for this year?
Debbie – Will you be posting the All Section and All Section Honorable Mentions (By Conference) later on tonight?
hotdog37….........why do you ask the question?
slapper
I heard about that. I am praying that it won’t go through for obvious reasons. Who would want to play that schedule? Waste of 6 games without mentioning what I am talking about that I know you know.
Thought that you played for Ursuline, just curious
Slapper is not from Ursuline.
Concerning the Morabito tournament, I saw a posting on syracuse.com in January or February by the person who runs the tournament inviting teams to apply to be in it. I don’t know how the process works, but from that post I am assuming that in order to be invited, you have to ask. Teams that are interested should monitor that site starting in January.
hotdog, with reference to your suggested field, JJEF is a team that does not deserve mention as a team to be included among the top teams in the state. They are an example of a team that has been great in the past but not much going on currently. They were crushed twice by Arlington this year, and Arlington, despite returning seven senior starters next year, is a team that would not compete among such competition and which, despite being loaded with talent, will probably under-perform in sectionals again as they do every year.
koala fan…........I heard from a good source its a done deal. Our league is not the only one going to change. I see a consolidation of teams into larger leagues, therefore less leagues. The leagues will be more geographic. Transportation costs were part of the thought process. There will be 8 teams in 1A next season. Meaning 14 league games. That leaves only 6 games outside of your league, with the 20 game rule. I do know what you are saying!
Morabito Tourney Contact Info. I was able to pull this off of their Web Site. I would think that if a team was interested in playing in the 2010 Tournament that they should contact Coach Cook at:
