Memo to ALL High School Coaches:
What I hear is going on in HS Softball is a joke…I know for a fact hs coaches are telling players NOT to play for their travel teams so not to get hurt for their sectional games…My question is, what happens to the girls who want to be seen and play in college?
What about the travel coach not wanting a top flight player being hurt to potentially hurt her future by playing against some lesser teams and players?
I was a starter in 3 sports in HS so im not oblivious as to the HS pressure and all that comes with it…but to be told or a better word is PRESSURED in that manner is just simply unprofessional for a coach to do…
I see the blogs with updates on the college world series of softball on all these articles…I dont care if it’s >001% chance…its what the serious players aspire to be…not to have it taken or a better word is ROBBED of it by a high school coach with an ego…
just a travel coach….......Very easy solution. Do not play high school softball. I bet college softball players are “pressured” by their coaches not to play/practice with their summer travel team until their college season is over. I do not see what the big problem is here. Most high school softball is over the first week of june, unless you make the state finals. Half the high schools teams out there do not even make the playoffs. So we are looking at maybe missing the first weekend in june as far as tournaments go. As a travel coach there is plenty of time off season(in the gym) to work out your players. To label a high school coach “unprofessional” because of this practice is unfair to say the least. Just like you want to “protect” your travel team players from injury ,so is he trying to “protect” his high school players from injury. One last thing, players can get hurt off the field not playing softball.Sounds like you are the one with the ego.
slapper your wrong about the college coach they want there players to keep playing in the summer. what these h.s. coach dont understand is they rather have them for 2hr prac. instead lettig them play in 4 or 5 games over the weekend which is the best prac. live pitchung live play. i agree travel should not start till after school ball but if they have a tournament they should not be told not to play.how would they like it if there players where told if you want to me on my travle team you can not play h.s. ball. lets face it the best players on h.s. team are for the most part travel ball players
sbdad…........ I NEVER said college coaches do not want their players to play summer ball.I said they would require them to wait until after the college season is finished. You are correct there is nothing better than getting game experience at a competative level(summer). If my daughter was told by a travel coach not to play high school softball, she would find another summer travel team to play on.I do not think there are many travel coaches out there who would “pressure their players to not play for their high school.High school softball is an important part of the “overall” softball experience, especially for those players who’s high schools have competative high school softball programs. One last thing…if you do play in a tournament while the high school season is still going and you have a high school game on a saturday which team do you play for? Now we are getting into the topic of committments.
You play for the High School team…end of story.
It is a priveledge to be picked for a HS team, and you are taking a potential spot from someone else who is trying out. If you can’t commit 100%, then you should not try out. If you roll the dice that you will never have a conflict with travel and wind up with one, the first priority should be to the school team.. There are plenty of opportunities to play with the travel team in the summer and fall. No brainer if you ask me. I do not agree with coaches forbidding players from going to travel games on their free time during the season.
koala fan….....Well Said ! I agree with you 100%. Some people just dont get it! I think you will agree it is all about the TEAM and COMMITMENT.
No question that a school game or practice takes precedence, and I’ve never known a travel coach who would say otherwise, or “pressure” a girl to not play HS ball.
The question concerned HS coaches who forbid their players from going to travel practice or games that do not interfere with any HS team event, which some HS coaches do.
i think what bugs some people is that you have HS coaches who, for the mose part, reap the benefits of what their players learn in travel ball, and do well because of that, not because of what they learn from the HS coach, and then turn around and make a girl take a weekend off and play no ball when their travel team is playing all weekend. That is what is wrong.
T.P. How many players out there could possibly be having this problem? I really dont think this affects many players out there. We are talking about playing summer and fall ball.My daughter has never had a conflict between the three seasons. She has played high school, then summer then fall and there has never been a conflict. The travel teams recognized the high school season and did not start playing summer until the first or second weekend in june.As far as benifits being reaped by high school coaches…....that is going to happen because alot of them do not coach a summer team. There are a few, Coach O’Donnell, Coach Marino just to name two that do coach a summer team. Their high school softball programs reap the benifits by doing summer ball. It makes their high school teams better.
My kid has not had this problem, because her coaches don’t care, but I’m aware of quite a few coaches who don’t let their kids do any outside ball until HS is done, and many (most) travel teams have been gearing up (practicing, playing scrimmages) for the past few weekends. I know half a dozen players who were not allowed to play in tournaments over the holiday weekend because their HS coaches wouldn’t let them. I’m not saying it’s the end of the world, but it’s just ironic because without their travel ball experience, the players wouldn’t produce like they do in HS and the HS coaches wouldn’t have everyone saying how great they are.
Interesting. At one time, there was a rule in Section 1 that prohibited an High School Athlete from playing on any “Travel Team” during the same “Athletic Season” as the sport that they play. (Example: High School Softball Player who plays HS ball in the Spring could not play Travel Ball until the HS Season was over. However, a HS Softball Player could play, say, Travel Team Soccer during the HS Softball Season.) The problem with all of this is the committment needed to play both HS Softball and any Travel Ball Committments that the player might have (on top of the Academic Committments that one has). I agree that if a Student Athlete commits to play HS Softball, that individual should give it 110% and not risk any unnecessary injury that could happen during any Travel Ball practices or weekend games.
Actually, the problem with having a rule that invades the personal time of an individual would be a violation of civil rights. The state knows this. Give them some credit. It would be lawsuit after lawsuit for them to deal with and I am glad they take the position that they do. Some schools have school policies that impose such rules, I don’t know how they get away with it.
Good luck today everyone.
Disagree 100% on “risking injury,” which we all do every time we go in a car. My daughter (and many others) is getting the work she needs at travel practice. Without the instruction and work they get there, these HS games would look like Little League. The smart HS coaches (I realize that narrows the field tremendously) know that the travel coaches are doing their work for them. They have no right to tell the kids what to do on their own time.
If that rule were in place now, many of the better players would choose travel over HS.
What I fear will eventually happen, is that there will no longer be any “High School Athletics” and everything will be playing “Travel Ball” for a team, after school and on weekends. This will partially be due to the lack of funding for Interscholastic Athletics by school districts within their budgets. We all know that Coaching Travel Ball pays allot more than HS Sports do and that in HS Sports, a Teacher who has tenure has first crack at the job. Therefore, the most qualified may not get the job
at a risk for bringing up ct in this forum…they have a rule, no travel ball during hs seaon statewide. not saying it is right, but takes the schools and coaches out of it.
To slapper t.p. hotdog school ball comes first i agree but if i have a chance for my players to play games or a 2 hr prac iam picking the games. We had 5 players that could not play over the the long weekend. where do this h.s.coachs get off telling these kids they can not get better because thats they would be doing getting better.and there ego cant take that..
I can understand the actions of the coach who tells his players they cannot play outside of the HS program during the season. I know it doesn’t happen often, but I know of at least one case where a key player was injured in an outside tournament and was unavailable for a very important league game that her team lost by 1 run. Could she have been the difference? Who knows. But tell that to the coach.
joe b i understand there is a chance of this girls getting hurt but there is a chance for them to get hurt at the pool or the beach or even at prac.It happens i do not agree with haveing travel ball during h.s. season but if it dose not conflict with there season why not let them play….
sbdad…........ My daughter is not allowed to play with another team until the high school season is over. School rule. It protects the player and the softball program.By the way that’s for ALL sports.Yeah, you can trip and fall down the stairs and break a leg, but the bottom line is exactly what joe b said. We have absolutely no problem with it.She has more than enough time to play travel in the summer and fall. Her high school team has 3 hour practices monday through saturday, sundays(pitching lessons) and game days. 20 games and all the practice, and lessons is more than enough. Then it is 1 week off and right into seven weekends of summer ball, right into fall ball 7 weekends. Sound like enough softball to me.I really do not see what the big deal is.I think the problem here lies in the fact that the coach is involved, not the school district. If it were a district rule, it is what it is.It would take the coach out of the picture.
true slapper very true slapper my daughter has same thing i take break in the summer so my daughter dose not get burn out but i hear what your saying your right make it a school rule not a coach rule
