Alabama (with Cassie) vs. AZ State starting now on ESPN in an elimination game for both.

Alabama (Reilly Boccia) vs Florida (Ali Gardner) 3:30 on ESPN. Bama must beat Florida 2 times to advance. Game 2 on ESPNU at 9:30 if necessary.

Tuesday at Lakeland at 4:30 TZ with Tayla Gardner against Lakeland and Brittany Lischinsky. Two of the top pitchers in Class A. Gardner is one of those top players who has been vastly overlooked. Should be a great game.

  4. hotdog37

This years Class A Tournament will be the most competitive ever. Between the 2 favorites (Pearl River and Lakeland) and add to that Harrison, Brewster and Tappan Zee, it will make for some exciting softball.

On a previous post we were discussing scholarships for softball. I know this is a baseball article, however it is about issues involving the cost to support a team financially. The UMass team is a division I program and only has 2 1/2 scholarships for the entire team.
    UMass considers cutting baseball
    By Brendan Hall

Email| Print| Single Page| Yahoo! Buzz| ShareThisText size – + As the University of Massachusetts baseball team was returning to Amherst Sunday afternoon after thrashing Richmond, 24-9, coach Mike Stone made it a point to address some sobering rumors.

When the players stepped off the bus during a stop for snacks, he gathered the team and told them he, too, had heard rumors of the team’s possible demise – but it was strictly buzz.

To many involved with the program, however, it’s beginning to feel like a constant sting.

For the second time this decade, the university is considering eliminating one or more varsity teams because of a projected budget shortfall, including the already under-funded baseball program. The team’s budget is around $180,000 and has just 2 1/2 scholarships, Stone said.

The Minutemen are off to a 6-9 start, including wins over Northwestern and Arizona. They followed up their 24-run output Sunday with a 6-4 win over Hartford yesterday.

Sources close to the team said a decision on the program could come

Ali Gardner just hit a walk-off grand slam to put Florida into the Womens College World Series 6-5

joe b…..........I heard this morning sec college football is cutting back from 33 scholarships per team to 23 scholarships per team in 2010.Everyteam in the sec ageed to this cut. It is all about the economy and money available. Some schools are hurting financially.I am sure college softball will follow this trend.

  9. koala fan

This was the info. I had on NCAA Football, I thought the SEC had always gone by this and football was considered a headcount sport. I wonder when they changed to 33? Football revenue is very important to softball at large universities. Softball programs at the big BCS schools get a lot of perks through football money. Such as training facilities, uniforms equipment etc…

The NCAA allows each division IA college football program 85 scholarships and each division IAA college 63 athletic scholarships. In division 2 there are 36 Scholarships.

To retain division I status, a football team must have 76.5 football scholarship players and can carry 85 active scholarship players. In division I-AA, schools have 63 scholarships, usually divided among 85 players.

koala fan…......I heard this from a friend. The numbers can be a little off. I do not know this as 100% fact. But there are definately cuts coming for scholarships. If they dont have the money, colleges have no choice but to cut. Division 1 may have to rethink how it lets teams retain there division 1 status. If colleges do not have the money for scholarships, the rules must change. They have no choice.

  11. koala fan

Agree. When will this crisis end? Soon hopefully for us all.

  12. slapper

koala fan…............I believe it is a short term thing.I am optimistic. The economy is recovering. It just may take a couple of years. Good luck tomorrow!

  13. koala fan

Thanks. You too. I will be sorry to see either of you guys out after tomorrow (WP/NR). Sad that it comes to this.

On another note, Bay Shore (Ranked 1 in state poll), lost twice in the championship series to Carey HS. Carey is the AA champ for suffolk county Section 11. Got an e-mail from somebody I know on the Carey team.

  15. koala fan

Sorry, I meant Brentwood won against Bay Shore, not Carey. Carey knocked out East Meadow in Nassau. Of course this has nothing to do with our stuff, but it may be useful to whomever advances to the regionals.

  16. hotdog37

Bay Shore was the # 1 ranked team in Class AA in New York State based upon last weeks poll. Newsday has allot of pull with the polls and Bay Shore, historically, has been a State Powerhouse for many many years. Coach McGowan from Bay Shore runs 2 a days (mandatory) for the team starting from Spring Practice throughout the year (5:30 AM and again at 2:45 PM). If you don’t show, you don’t play. Tough regimine and tough program. (But look at his results [State Championships] and the number of scholarship players he has produced). I am sure he is not a “Happy Camper” right now, getting bounced out in the Sectionals.

  17. slapper

hotdog37…...........Just goes to show you even the best(top ranked team)can lose in the playoffs. Bay Shore has an accomplished softball program in N.Y.S.,no doubt about it. Coach McGowan has over 600 wins in his tenure as Bay Shore’s coach.Even though it was a scrimmage, I know he was not happy when White Plains beat Bay Shore 1-0 a couple of weeks ago.I saw his reaction.Just goes to show, that depending on what team shows up, any team can beat their opponent on any given day. There is alot of pressure being a #1 ranked team.

  18. hotdog37

The kid who pitched the perfect game for Brentwood against Bay Shore in the 2nd game (they play best 2 out of 3 in the Sectional Championship Games in Section 11) is outstanding. Their game against probable opponent Long Branch out of Section 8 will be a very good one indeed. Here in Section 1, North Rockland has that huge load on its shoulders, being the # 1 seed. Teams like Arlington, Ursuline, White Plains, etc can knock each other off, depending on the type of day each team is having along with a little luck. Bay Shore HS Coach Jim McGowan is allot like Binghamton HS (and former Sus Valley HS and current Conklin Raider Coach, Dale Cook. Very tough on their teams and demands excellence. They both coach their teams like a College Coach would.

  19. koala fan

I think Carey will win section 8 over Long Beach. Just a hunch.

I wondered why after the great game pitched by Liz Weber in the semis, McGowan did not stick with her into the finals. The same pitcher had both losses. Additionally Liz pitched the scrimmage that they won over St. John the Baptist. If you have seen Liz pitch, as I have on numerous occasions, she is the number one on that team.

No comment on McGowan and his game tactics, (my daughter has played against his teams many times in travel) although he gets results.

  20. hotdog37

Have seen Coach McGowan replace an All State Pitcher who was entering her Junior Year with a New Freshman Pitcher, because of a conflict between the player and coach. The Junior player transferred to another school and ended up beating her old team in Sectionals. That did not sit well with him at all

  21. slapper

hotdog37…........WOW! Talk about “sweet revenge”.Kudos to the player and her parents for making the move to another school. It is very sad that it came down to a player coach relationship. That should have been worked out. I have seen some things done and said by Coach McGowen on the field to his players that were a little shocking, even to his own daughter. That being said ,he has produced some good players over his tenure and has an incredible coaching record.Unfortunately, sometimes it is the way people get to were they are and the effect it has on other people.I personally do’nt like his “style” of coaching. I am speaking as a father of two softball players, and someone who has coached from little league up to travel ball.

  22. hotdog37

Slapper – Coach McGowan is actually the High School Psychologist at Bay Shore HS, so I guess that he knows allot about motivation. Yes, I too believe that there might be better methods for motivation and not everyone who plays HS Softball plays it for scholarships but just for the competitiveness and fun. But as you said, the results of his methods speak for themselves. I guess some call it “Tough Love”

    any predictions on todays games?

  24. koala fan

I predict there will be 4 teams standing in each division except C by the end of today. lol

Looking at my previous history of picking, which is not good, I will do as in poker CHECK.

  26. let'er'rip

I’m going to make my predictions for today:

    AA
    N. Rock over Scarsdale
    WP over New Roch.
Ursuline over Carmel ( Go Taylor P.!)
Arlington over Yorktown (I think end of the road for Yorktown here)

    A
Harrison over Beacon (Bring it on Ashley!)
Brewster over Pelham (Greisenger too dominant)
    Lakeland over TZ
    Pearl River over Eastchester

    B
P.V. over Pleasantville (just a little overmatched)
    Albertus Mag. over Kennedy
    Rye Neck over Irvington
    Dobbs Ferry over Westlake

    C
    N. Salem over Valhalla

    Anyone else agree or disagree?

  27. FPSBfann

I think Beacon over Harrison here, and as far as Brewster over Pelham, Brewster has a very strong offense. And lastly of course, Kennedy over Albertus!

  28. hotdog37

Here is my shot at today’s predictions:

I’m going to make my predictions for today:

    Class AA
    N. Rockland over Scarsdale (Great Pitching prevails over a Scarsdale Team that has reached the end of the road)

White Plains over New Rochelle (Coach O’Donnell is one of the best and the Tigers get on a roll)

Ursuline over Carmel (I picked Ursuline to lose in the first round but was proven wrong. I will go with the Lady Kooalas to mover on futher)

Arlington over Yorktown (Yorktown had the Dymanic Duo last year, but not this year. Arlington moves on easily)

    Class A

Harrison over Beacon (Harrison’s defense and smart softball play brings them another step forward)

Brewster over Pelham (Brewster is taking the momentum gained by their appearance from the Morabito Tournament and will beat Pelham)

UPSET SPECIAL: Tappan Zee over Lakeland (I think that Tayla’s recent pitching has finally come to form and TZ squeezes out a close upset victory over Lakeland)

Pearl River over Eastchester: Eastchester has had a very good year, but too much Pirate Offense and GREAT COACHING prevails)

    CLASS B:

Putnam Valley over Pleasantville (Coaching Edge goes to P’Ville but Pitching, Offense and Defense goes to P.V – So Putnam Valley moves on)

Albertus Magnus over JF Kennedy (The Rockland County School has the better defense and will advance)

Rye Neck over Irvington (This is one of Rye Neck’s best teams in quite some time. No problem at all today)

Dobbs Ferry over Westlake (The Lady Eagles appear to be on a quest to show everyone that they are a team to be dealt with)

    Class C

North Salem over Valhalla (Coach Middlestat history in the Section One Tournament is legendary. NS in a blow out)
