And now a crazy night has come to a close. All I can say is that Marianna Monaco has a rubber arm. For to come back after the 12 inning game yesterday and pitch a complete game against Tappan Zee is remarkable.

I hope someone is taking care of Marianna’s arm after she pitches. It is important to take off days(rest) between games(not pitching every day) and applying ice to her arm/ shoulder, keep track of pitch counts per game, etc..Let’s not forget she is only an 8th grader. She has a long career ahead of her. If care is not taken, her arm WILL become rubber.Best of luck and health to Marianna the rest of the season!

  2. sb fan

    sb observer,
frankly it doesn’t matter what grade the players are in, if they are good enough to play than they should be on the team and get necessary playing time. All of this talk of seniors not being cut and playing over better underclassmen is ridiculous and is actually doing a disservice to the seniors, what will they do in the real world, just be awarded because they are older when someone else may very well be better than them?!!

  3. slapper

I think it depends on the individual. Everyone is different(physically, mentally, etc). Some kids are successful in making the move to varsity some are not.Hopefully if they are not successful, it was’nt because of poor judgement by all those involved(family members,coaches,A.D.’s, the player herself) in making the decision to move a young player to the varsity level. There is an awful lot to think about in making this BIG decision. I went through the same thing with my daughters. We have a responsibility to our kids as parents not to put our kids in that type of situation(using bad judjments). We happened to make the right decision. I hope others have the same experience we have. Think before you act!

  4. softball groupie

Slapper, what would be a safe # of pitches in a game and how much time should be given after a game befoer they pitch again and is that in a game or should they rest from practice also. The answers you will given to all of us that information was obtained from where? If it is from a good source it could be very helpful.

  5. slapper

Softball groupie…........... Pitchers NEED their rest. From my past experience( I have 2 pitchers) your pitcher “should” get the day off after a 7 inning or more game. There is nothing wrong with pitching back to back games (consecutive days). If you are pitching 3-4 games a week that does not leave much time to practice. Usually you work on a pitch or two(if a pitch is’nt working) during the season as time permits between games. Keep the in season practice to within reason. Hopefully you prepared for the most part over the winter.Pitchers must “listen” to their bdies. They need to maintain themselves. Ice is important after pitching. Pitch counts are relative to percentage of balls to strikes thrown. Usually (not all the time) the higher the stike to ball ratio the less total pitches thrown. Teams defense can also affect pitch counts. I’ve seen pitchers win games, with anywhere from 80 to 150 pitchers, there is alot to pitch counts, it is just a tool. Again this is one of those individual things. Some pitchers can pitch 3 games in one day. If you track your pitchers you will see the numbers that work for her. Cheri Kempf has a good book on pitching. There are others. This is just a small part of pitching there is alot more to it. I speak from experience only. I am NOT an expert on this subject. These are just some of the things that have worked for us over the last few years.Use the common sense approach. If it seems like your doing to much, you probably are. I hope this helps you.

sb fan…........ Go easy! There is a little more to it than seniors playing over an 8th grader! It’s a no brainer to play a younger player over a senior, if the younger player is better. I know I would play the younger player, if I were the coach. I think most coaches would do the same.

  7. slapper

sb fan….......... something to think about…...Most coaches, A.D.’s etc.would not move a 7th or 8th grader up to varsity if she was not going to get quality pitching/playing time. This would not help develope the talent that this young player seems to possess. She would be far better off pitching every game for the JV instead(just exaggerating!). As far as seniors not playing over 7th & 8th graders. So be it if she is a better player than the senior. The older player has a choice get better or sit. Age/grade should not be a factor in playing time.My daughters varsity coach won’t hesitate to pull an older player if she is not perfoming,in favor of a younger player, who is playing better at the time. That’s the way it should be.It’s not about age or grade. It’s nothing personal. It’s about the team and what keeps them competative and not some senior who’s nose is out of joint about playing time that they may not deserve. That’s life, get used to it.

Very interesting discussion of the effects of softball pitching on the arm on Cindy Bristow’s web site (former college coach, I forget where):

    http://www.softballexcellence.com/Page.bok?template=in_art_0152

  9. FPSBfann

The section is really up for grabs this year as no team is truly dominating, with the exception of North Rockland of course. Surprising wins in Pelham over Eastchester and Sleepy Hollow over Magnus- so much for a predictable season!

  10. Debbie Schechter

    FPSBfann,

You’re right about North Rockland… but you’re forgetting someone; how about Pearl River?!?!? They have the same exact record that the Red Raiders do.

  11. slapper

Thomas Paine…........ I will be sure to check it out. As a parent of pitchers and an ex coach of a competative travel softball program, it is important to educate oneself about what it is like to be a pitcher. I am one who believes in this approach. I am always looking for ways to make my(daughters) better as pitchers. It is important for pichers parent and coaches to be up on this issue, and educate themselves any way they can! Thanks for the info!

  12. dblplay

White Plains 1…...Scarsdale 0. Great game to watch. Both team played well.Nice effort by both teams!

  13. Thomas Paine

sounds like a great game in WP (or Scarsdale).

From up north: Arlington 4, Ketcham 0. Back to back solo homers from Amy Weinberg and Jackie Macak in the second inning. A one-hitter (I think) by Emmie Dolfi.

  14. pick'r off

One difference between North Rockland and Pearl River is the class they play section finals in. NR is AA Pearl River is A.

  15. Thomas Paine

who did NR lose to? I missed that one.

  16. pick'r off

NR lost to Scarsdale 2 – NR 0

  17. slapper

Thomas Paine…......... I read the article about pitching from softballexcellence.com. It’s not a coincidence that I addressed the same issues. I touched base on alot of the things talk about in that article. This is a prime example of experience and education having helped me along the way.

  18. FPSBfann

I don’t see Pearl River as an absolutely dominating team like NR is. Pearl River has some tough competition in A especially in Lakeland and Brewster. Both teams are good, but I’m just saying Pearl River doesn’t have a sure shot at A, they’re going to have to fight some good hitting teams on the other side of the river for it.

  19. Thomas Paine

I don’t know about absolutely dominating. They have won a lot of low-scoring one-run games

  20. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

All I have to say is NR beat Pearl River pretty easy last week. If PR would have won that tournament we’d still be reading about. NR wins the tournament barely a word about it.

  21. Thomas Paine

I agree with what you said about NR/PR and that NR is the team to beat in Class AA. My point was just that “absolutely dominating” is not really accurate. To me, that implies putting teams away by a large margin. But, i suppose it’s a small point because a win is a win.

  22. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

NR has quality pitching and above average defense. If they get some consistant hitting they are going to be awfully tough

  23. pick'r off

For what its worth – State Ranking are out – AA
    North Rockland 6th
    Arlington 20th
    White Plains 24
    A
    Pearl River 3rd
    Lakeland 5th
    Beacon 20
    B
    Dobbs Ferry 6th
    Putnam Valley 10th
    Albertus 19th
    C
    Haldane 9th

  24. koala fan

Watch the replay of last nights varcity central, Debbie talked lots about how well North Rockland played in the tournament, and how dominating Samantha Welsh was in the circle. Unfortunately, she also mentioned an injury to Krystn Benson. I hope she is OK, and can get back in the circle soon.

  25. Thomas Paine

I figured Benson must have been injured when i saw Welsh pitched both games at PR, but it was not mentioned in the coverage here, which supports the assertion that NR doesn’t get enough respect (much like Put Valley . . . #10 . . . wtg!!)

  26. pick'r off

Debbie wasn’t at the tournament. She hasn’t seen No Rock play since early last season a game against TZ, that NR lost.

  27. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

I wanted to see that last night too but I wasn’t able too. Glad to hear NR got some credit. Krystn Benson should be OK and back in the circle soon

  28. exit66

slapper. sounds like you have a pretty good understanding of the pitching subject. Is the hs coach the instructor or an outside source? If outside, who do u suggest I contact? thanks

  29. Thomas Paine

    here we go

  30. slapper

exit66…........It is a combination of both outside pitching instruction and H.S. coach.I have no problem sharing certain things with you about pitching. With all due respect I will not reveal the pitching instructors name. Some things we do must remain a secret. You could be the competition or pass the information on to our competition.I am sorry, I hope you understand. It is nothing personal.

    Rockland Softball

You can see it on demand by clicking on the link from Debbie’s post about it, then when the video box opens up, look at the video box and to the right, click on the one for 4/28 and you can re-play it. Debbie is at the end with the softball talk if you want to skip the other stuff, slide the dot in the play bar to the right to approx. the 45 min mark (maybe a little beyond that).

  32. DCFan

It is still looking like north rockland v. arlington to me; with NR as the one to beat. I hope benson returns. arlington’s #1 has only 1 loss (to NR 1-0). In the past 2 games she has thrown she and the coach who calls the pitches are working much better together: 20 innings, 0 runs, 2 hits, 21 k’s & 1 walk against clarkstown north and ketcham.

  33. DCFan

    my mistake earlier——-16 innings.

  34. Thomas Paine

aren’t WP and Scarsdale in this mix also?

  35. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

I was at the NR/Arlington game. That day I said these two teams will see each other again. Arlington was a very good team. From what I have read here coaching could be an issue w/ Arlington. Coaching was actually an issue in their game againt NR. Runner on third w/ less than two outs in the 6th of a 0-0 game, Arlington had the infield back, ground ball to second run scores they lose 1-0.

  36. DCfan

Yes Mr. Paine, I believe they will be in the mix along with Clarkston North. WP is playing very well. I saw them against JJEF. Also, Ursuline does not give up many runs so they will always be in the game. Arlington has the highest powered offense of all of them (and one of their biggest bats is still out)—the NR pitching has given them the most trouble the past 2 years. In this game, good pitching will stop good hitting. Scarsdale does not match up well with Arlington..I believe the 2 teams are essentially the same teams as last year. Should be alot of fun with so many quality teams…...

  37. Thomas Paine

All good points. Ursuline’s pitcher is a good as anyone in the section, but their defense seems a notch below the top teams. Runs against them are usually unearned. As for good pitching stopping Arlington’s potent offense, and the coaching matchups, we will see over the next 5 weeks. It should be fun (maybe).

  38. exit66

slapper… i understand. no problem from me.

  39. softball groupie

Slapper, It sounds as if you dont want compitition for your daughters. thier HS Coach shares the pitching coach with others. Exit66, I will get the name and # and will get it posted. If I had a daughter and if she was a pitcher and was happy with her instructor I would want to help her instructor as I could, not 5 years later when my daughters are out of school.

  40. dblplay

softball groupie….......... See what I get for being a nice guy. I gave out information about pitching.Un fortunately you dont like the fact that I won’t tell you everything. This has nothing to do with helping my daughters pitching instructor. I have already done that over the past 5 years by sending other players in the area for instructions, and paying for lessons for my daughters. I dont’ know what you know about pitching. It appears to be not to much. The pitchers(and their coaches) that I know want whatever edge they can get in the circle. If that means not telling the world who your pitching instructor is so be it.Do you think that coaches talk to each other before every game and exchange information about who instructs their pitchers? I really doubt they do. Give me a break! This has nothing to do with my daughter being “happy” with her pitching instructor. We are happy with her instructor. If we were not we would go somewhere else. You are twisting this into something that it is not.You are way off base dragging my daughter into this. She has nothing to do with what I have said on this blog. Here we go again with the agendas. Some people just can’t help themselves. Grow up, and while your at it get a life!
