Yorktown’s Cassie Reilly-Boccia (Class AA), and Tappan Zee’s Brittni Alexander and Pearl River’s Krystina Poloni (Class A) were selected first-team all state in their respective classes by the New York State Softball Writers Association.
Reilly-Boccia, who will play softball at Alabama next year, was instrumental in propelling Yorktown to a second consecutive Class AA sectional title.
Alexander, who will attend Notre Dame, set a state single-season stolen base record with 56. Poloni was one of the main reasons Pearl River won a sectional championship and advanced to the state final four.
In Class AA, Sandra Mastrangelo of White Plains and Yorktown’s Kasey O’Connor were third-team selections and John Jay fireballer and Gaby Torzilli was a fifth-team pick.
In Class A, Pearl River’s Jackie Bruno was a second-team selection and Kirby Wright of Hen Hud was a third-team choice. Brewster’s Kim Bentson was tabbed on the fourth team, and Lakeland’s Brittany Lischinsky and Pearl River’s Katie Scrima were awarded fifth-team honors.
Class B’s lone representative was Albertus Magnus’ Erin Flaherty, who was a third-team pick.

l State players
I am shocked that NYSSWA has selected Olivia Galati of St. John the Baptist High School as the Class AA Player of the Year over Yorktown’s Cassie Reilly Boccia. Cassie should have been selected as the Class AA Player of the Year given her accomplishments this year on the field and that she had already been selected Gatorade State Player of the Year

Tony, There will be a great fast pitch tournament in Orangburg this weekend. It will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Rockland Thunder 18U coached by George Colby, consists of the following Rockland players. from TZ Brittni Alexander, Tayla Gardner, Kayla Meyer and Julie pacino. From Pearl River Katie Scrimer, jackie Bruno and Krystina Poloni

It will be a great weekend of softball!
Tony, if you have nothing to do this July 5th and are looking for good softball, come out to the Knights of Columbus Tournament in Orangetown. One great game to be seen is at 4:00 at Pearl River High School. Rockland Thunder 18U Elite team, which includes Pearl River’s Jackie Bruno, Katie Scrima and Krystina Poloni; Tappan Zee’s Brittni Alexander, Kayla Meyer and Tayla Gardner; North Rockland’s Samantha Welsh; Suffern graduate Alyssa Cataldo, and former TZ player Julie Pacino, will be pitted against the Brewster Rockets. This should prove to be great softball for a good cause!
Dear Hallie,
Whatever….
Don’t you even feel the slight bit of embarrassment making such a statement? After all, you made such a colossal big deal of bashing the honor of Gatorade Player of The Year Award. Now you come out and raise this idiotic question. For one who seems to know as much as you claim, why say anything at all? You know the selection committees are different for each of these awards. I am sure that both Olivia and Cassie are truly happy for one another, as they do play on the same Gold team.
As Joe B. has said on numerous occasions, you post something to generate a response and get attention. It is crystal clear. You can’t bash the way you did and then come out in defense at a later time. Then again, it is a free country , you can do whatever you want. But, we all know that you are trying to draw us in for another sucker punch.
Congrats to all the great players who earned these high honors.
Happy Summer.
Not looking to draw in another sucker punch. My comments above were meant as being critical of “THE SELECTION PROCESSES OF BOTH GATORADE and the NYSSSA”. To the fact that the New York State Sportswriters Association felt that Oliva warranted State Player of the Year Honors for Class AA (which was voted on AFTER the season was over) vs. the Gatorade Committee voting Cassie as State Player of the Year. My comments all along had and has NOTHING to do with the qualifications or merits of either player (both girls are deservant of the honors that they received). However, it would be NICE to have 1 “Unified” State Player of the Year (Yes, I have heard the stories about the Heisman Award vs. NCAA Player of the Year, but this is High School Softball where everyone should be considered for Post Season Honors on the same playing field). Yes, I know those who will say that Gatorade can decide on who they want and the NYSSWA can decide on who they want. But who is the Unified “REAL” State Player of the Year? BOTTOM LINE: Gatorade and the NYSSWA need to get together and decide TOGETHER so there is NO QUESTION !!! Thats been my point all along.
PS – If the NYSSWA had selected Cassie as their Class AA State Player of the Year, I would have come on here and “EATEN CROW” and said to everyone that my statements were WRONG and that the system worked. But by Oliva getting the nod, it didn’t happen, therefore the system (in my opinion) is flawed.
People please. Don’t even respond to her remarks. She is an attention getter who thinks the softball world revolves around her. Let her be.
I can’t believe I am writing this post.
In my years of covering softball, I have never once been consulted for the state poll or when it comes time to selecting the all-state softball players.
Enough said.
Tony
And this is on the level. Given your vast experience over the years covering High School in Section 1, your thoughts and comments regarding All State Selections would be wanted by the NYSSWA
According to the NYSSWA Web Site,tThe New York State Sportswriters Association consists of member of virtually every newspaper and many radio and TV stations in the state that make up more than its 300 members.
I see that Neil Kerr of the Syracuse Post Standard is President of the NYSSWA. I understand that he is one of the most well respective High School Sports Journalist in the Country.
I would contact Neil Kerr to see why no one contacted you in regards to the 2008 NYSSWA All State Softball Selections. I would say the same to the Gatorade State Softball Player of the Year Selection. Your opinion on that award should have been made part of the overall final selections for both the NYSSWA Awards and the Gatorade Awards.
