Well it seems that Nanuet will live to play another day. The 10-11 year old softball team defeated South Orangetown last night 10-3 over at the Nanuet Little League. Tony was right about Danielle DiModugno. She was a heck of a pitcher.
They got good offensive performances from Janine Mackey and Jamie Iseman at the top of the lineup.
The deciding game will be tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at South Orangetown Little League.
Tonight is the 9-10 year old championship at Stony Point Little League at 7 p.m. It’s Pearl River vs. Stony Point.
The summer all-star softball season is still going (with Brewster majors playing in the state championship), but before I forgot, I wanted to congratulate all of the girls in Districts 18, 20 and 33 for their summer seasons, especially the respective champs:
Haverstraw senior softball for another outstanding season. Even though the season ended on a controversial note (How does the umpiring staff allow a coach to talk them out of a call?) Haverstraw had another fine summer.
The New City majors softball team emerged from the losers bracket to beat Stony Point, 4-3 in seven innings (an excellent game) then beat Stony Point in the ‘IF’ game to win the District 18 title.
The Eastchester majors softball team which won the District 20 title and reached the Section 3 final, where it fell to Brewster. Eastchester varsity coach Skip Walsh will be smiling when many of these girls get to varsity.
The 9-10-year winner will be crowned this week as Pearl River takes on South Orangetown. These teams will play Wednesday.
The 11-year-old title will also be decided this week with Nanuet and South Orangetown squaring off, beginning Tuesday (tonight) at Lake Nanuet. This should be a good one as Nanuet features a pair of fine windmillers in Danielle DiModugno and Janine Mackey.
Before I forget I wanted to thank the organizers of the Alicia Brady softball tournament. My daughter, Elena, was fortunate to be selected to Nanuet’s 9-10-year-old team that participated, and she and her teammates enjoyed playing in it. It was well run and the tournament directors did not lose sight of the fact that the intent was for the girls to have fun and enjoy themselves.
The Journal News published its annual spring all-star and all-county sections. If you did not get a chance to read it this morning, here are the links to the Westchester/Putnam and Rockland sections:
This came courtesy of Tayla Gardner’s mom and a Pearl River mom. Thank you ladies.:
Tony, There will be a great fast pitch tournament in Orangburg this weekend. It will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Rockland Thunder 18U coached by George Colby, consists of the following Rockland players: From TZ Brittni Alexander, Tayla Gardner, Kayla Meyer and Julie Pacino, and from Pearl River, Katie Scrima, Jackie Bruno and Krystina Poloni, Alyssa Cataldo from Suffern, and Sam Welsh from North Rockland. First game is at 12 at the St Thomas Aquinas field.
In the match up of the day, 4 p.m. in Pearl River. Katie Scrima will go up against Pearl River teammate Kaitlin Dinet of the Brewster Rockets. The Rockets feature Brewster hard-hitting first baseman Kim Bentson and hard-hitting catcher Lindsay Goff.
I suggest if you are a softball fan and live in Rockland County, head over to Pearl River for this game. If you are a softball fan and you reside in Westchester, make the trip. It is worth it to watch some of Section 1’s most outstanding players matching up. How often do you get to see this star quality playing together on one diamond.
For many of us, it will also be the last time we get to see Brittni Alexander, Jackie Bruno, Kim Bentson and Lindsay Goff play.
If I didn’t think that the parents would have me removed from the field, I would be there myself. I have to flip a coin as to whether I should chance attending. Just kidding parents.
Yorktown’s Cassie Reilly-Boccia (Class AA), and Tappan Zee’s Brittni Alexander and Pearl River’s Krystina Poloni (Class A) were selected first-team all state in their respective classes by the New York State Softball Writers Association.
Reilly-Boccia, who will play softball at Alabama next year, was instrumental in propelling Yorktown to a second consecutive Class AA sectional title.
Alexander, who will attend Notre Dame, set a state single-season stolen base record with 56. Poloni was one of the main reasons Pearl River won a sectional championship and advanced to the state final four.
In Class AA, Sandra Mastrangelo of White Plains and Yorktown’s Kasey O’Connor were third-team selections and John Jay fireballer and Gaby Torzilli was a fifth-team pick.
In Class A, Pearl River’s Jackie Bruno was a second-team selection and Kirby Wright of Hen Hud was a third-team choice. Brewster’s Kim Bentson was tabbed on the fourth team, and Lakeland’s Brittany Lischinsky and Pearl River’s Katie Scrima were awarded fifth-team honors.
Class B’s lone representative was Albertus Magnus’ Erin Flaherty, who was a third-team pick.
