Tony, thanks for the shout out for me as Erin “Jenny Finch” Bruehl :). I also wanted to say congratulations to Cassie on being state player of the year. As Tony said, I always enjoyed watching Yorkown play – especially hit! And Cassie was not just one of the most talented but also one of the most gracious players around. And congratulations to Yorktown and Pearl River for advancing so far…that’s at least three straight years Section 1 has had a Class A representative in the state final four – I’m sure Tony knows if it’s an even longer streak than that! I had the pleasure of following Tappan Zee and Hen Hud there the past two years… good luck this year to the Pirates!

What other Section 1 players were named Allstate?

    Rockland Softball –

Don’t know yet. As soon as I know I will post them.

As this is an outstanding honor for Cassie, the NYS Gatorade Player of the Year can ONLY be voted on by coaches who are members of the NFCA (National Fast Pitch Coaches Association). If you don’t pay your due and become a member you cannot vote, and the larger percentage of Coaches around are not members. I am sure Cassie will probably be a first team all state selection, I would say that a number of Class AA Coaches whose teams are still playing in the State Final 4 would think that their players are just as deserving if not more deserving. This Gatorade Award needs to be given out AFTER States are over and more people need to have a say into it. Again, this is not to dillute Cassie’s selection, but just puts it into perspective.

THANKS Hallie for your very thoughtful imput. I am sure that you had to wrestle with your conscience to make this stupid statement. Can’t wait to hear your criticism of the All State selections. Thank God softball season is almost over. You didn’t wrestle in high school, did you ?

I knew when I wrote this blog that some people could have an issue with it. Again, this is not to diminish Cassie’s accomplishments at all. It was only to point out the “Flaws” within the Gatorade State Player of the Year award. This Gatorade Award has been deemed “controversial” over the past 10 years or so, since it has been given, in Softball for NYS. This Gatorade Award is NOT connected in anyway with either the All Section or All State Selections. The Sportswriters, Sectional Softball Coordinators, League Representatives and Coaches, who vote on and select both the All Section and All State Teams, DO NOT (with the exception of certainly coaches, who can nominiate, but do not vote, based upon paying their membership into the NFCA) vote on the Gatorade State Player of the Year. Just say, for discussion sake, that Yorktown had advanced to the State Finals in Class AA and WON THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP this year. And say, for agrument sake, that a player, say from FDR High School out of Section 9, was selected as the Gatorade State Player of the Year, BEFORE the State Final Four was even played, and Cassie ended up as being the MVP of the State Finals and was choosen by the NYS Sportswriters and Coaches Association as not only being a First All State Team Member, but the Player of the Year in Class AA, but the Gatorade Player of the Year was not Cassie, but the individual who was selected as the Gatorade State Player of the Year from FDR High School out of Section 9? I’d bet allot of people would be very upset about that and would say that it did not make sense. The Gatorade State Player of the Year Award should be made by the SAME people (referenced above) that selected the All Section and All State Teams and NOT by a paying member of the NFCA, who claims to represent NYS

You say “The Gatorade State Player of the Year Award should be made by the SAME people (referenced above) that selected the All Section and All State Teams and NOT by a paying member of the NFCA, who claims to represent NYS”

Why? Because you say so? That award is given out by paying members of the NFCA and sponsored by Gatorade, so they can give it to anyone they choose to give it to. Just as you are entitled to any opinion about the award that you choose to have.

You could have exercised a little decorum and expressed your opinion at some other time/place.

  8. hallie lynhart

    HS Softball Fan

I respect your opinion and view point, but wouldn’t it be strange to have the NYS Gatorade Player of the Year “Different” than the State Player of the Year for Class AA, A, B, C, and D? Yes, Gatorade and the NFCA can choose whom they want to. But wouldn’t it be nice that all parties agree to have some consistancy on the award (see my comments within the Pearl River Blog)

  9. hallie lynhart

    To All:

Here’s a great agrument. What if Pearl River goes on and WINS the State Class A Championship and during the process, Katie Scrima pitches back to back no hitters. Katie is then given the MVP Award at the State Championship, is selected First Team All State and State Player of the Year in Class A, all by the members of the NYS Sportswriters and Coaches Association? Shouldn’t Katie be given allot of consideration for the Gatorade State Player of the Year Award, that was given to Cassie Boccia-Reilly out of Yorktown? Would everyone not agree that Katie should be given “Equal” consideration, as would Cassie, for the Gatorade Award and let everyone voting to look at the complete body of work that all nominees are deservant of having? Again, it is not to take away from Cassie, but not to give outstanding athletes like Katie Scrima a shot of getting the award as well, given how she could impact her team in 2008, towards a potential State Championship, would be very sad

  10. joe b

Hallie. It is “player of the year” not player of the state Finals.. I am sure they have an MVP award for the NYS Championships. Two games do not make a players season. And yur solution would eliminate every player who doesn’t make the FINAL FOUR. Maybe the NYSPHSAA should confer with you before they make any decisions in the future. Congrats Cassie you are “The Gatorade Player of the Year”

  11. Tony Pinciaro

    Hallie –

Instead of congratulating Cassie Reilly-Boccia for the great season she had and this award, you choose to tarnish what she accomplished by complaining about the voting process, how it should amended and when it should be held.

You get on your soapbox and then conclude it by saying: “Again, this is not to dillute Cassie’s selection, but just puts it into perspective.” If you didn’t mean to “dilute” Cassie’s selection you should not have brought this whole topic up.

You have got to be kidding me!

Cassie Reilly-Boccia had a great year and Yorktown came within a game of advancing to the state final four. So, because Yorktown did not win a state title or advance to the final four, Reilly-Boccia should not be considered?

Hallie…The softball season and its awards are not your own private little agenda. Granted Katie Scrima had an outstanding season. So did many other players throughout the state. Cassie Boscia Reilly batted .495 with 8 HR and 44 RBI. She had an obp of .578 and a slugging percantage of .923. K.Strimas strength was her pitching. Her batting stats do not compare with Reillys numbers. I don’t think the Player of the Year award in any sport is given after the NYS Championships. And if you are picking them as the State Champs, that is the KISS OF DEATH

  13. hallie lynhart

The Body of Work should include SECTIONALS, REGIONALS and STATE, not just the REGULAR SEASON. I did’nt mean to tarnish Cassie’s award and I too feel she is an outstanding player. However, I, as Joe B, Tony and others are entitled to their opinion. Why is everyone on a BASHING BANDWAGON against me. I have not gone here and insinuated that Joe B or Tony or anyone else who makes a statement or a prediction is making the “Kiss Of Death” I am disappointed in a number of people using this as a bashing forum rather than for respective debate. Sad Sad Sad

  14. Tony Pinciaro

    Hallie –

You started this by complaining about who is chosen to vote on this award and why you think it should be changed. Where was this whole debate last year when a non Section 1 player won the award?

Oh, by the way Hallie, each of my colleagues read your initial comment and agree, that you are taking away from what Cassie Reilly-Boccia accomplished.

While you might think: “I am sure Cassie will probably be a first team all state selection,” here is my thought.

If Cassie Reilly-Boccia is not a first-team all-state selection there should be a Federal Investigation. Wait a minute though, Yorktown did not make it to the state final four so will Cassie Reilly-Boccia still be considered?

  15. Debbie Schechter

    Look Hallie

Just because Cassie isn’t playing in the state final four doesn’t diminish what she’s done. She is the best player in the state and no one put those type of numbers up.

As someone who has played the game since I was in the fourth grade; I respect someone with the sick numbers that Cassie put up all year.

The bottom line is that you can’t make the comparison with Katie Scrima because they don’t play the same position. When Scrima didn’t pitch this year; she was a second baseman. Cassie’s a first baseman; you can’t make a side-by-side comparison.

You need to get down from your soap box and realize that what everyone else has said makes sense. To do what Cassie has done all year and to have Yorktown within a game of the State Final four is nothing short of fantastic and completely deserving of the award.

Thursday, May 29, 2008: Cooperstown senior earns Gatorade baseball award

Leading off today: Clemson-bound Cooperstown senior Philip Pohl has been named the Gatorade New York Baseball Player of the Year, The Daily Star reported today.
“It’s a great honor,” Pohl told the paper. “To even be considered a top player in New York is a huge honor. It’s a huge state. I’m speechless.”

A 6-foot, 195-pound catcher, Pohl is hitting .446 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. He also has 29 stolen bases for a 16-4 ballclub. Pohl hit .473 with a school-record five home runs and stole 41 bases as a junior.

Pohl sounds like a worthy candidate, but does anyone else wonder about the timing of the announcement? Sectionals are just getting started in most areas of the state, meaning a lot of players still have as many as seven or eight games to play. In addition, the cutoff for nominations and selections in order to accommodate the announcement this week was probably some time in mid-May, meaning a decision was made approximately halfway through the season.

Speaking of awards: Teresa Noyola of Palo Alto (Calif.) High was named Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The 5-foot-2 senior midfielder, a Mexican native, scored 18 goals and added seven assists in 16 games this spring.

She’s the first player named Youth, Scholar-Athlete and High School Player of the Year in the same year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the
    first two-time Parade Magazine

  17. Erin Bruehl

Let me just add my two cents again as someone who has seen a lot of hs softball the past few years… Cassie is playing on scholarship at the U of Alabama next year.. I’d be interested in just how many players in New York State are going to play on scholarship at top 10 program like Alabama, which I believe finished the year as the No.4 team in the country.

  18. Koala Fan

    Hallie,

Stop being so mean. This is a well deserved, amazing honor. You bashed Yorktown all of last year. Please just stop now.

The girl has worked hard probably since she was 10 years old. She is a great player and I have never heard ANYONE utter a negative word about her.

She deserves the award, whether you think the selection process is flawed or not. As a paying member of the NFCA, through travel ball, I am a little insulted that you are bashing this great organization as well.

  19. joe b

hallie—-I think by now everybody realizes this has nothing to do with Cassie winning this award. It is all about you and the attention you crave. It has alays been about you. Most of your comments contain too many me and I and my statements. You throw names around like most of these people are your best friends. You take credit for very obvious predictions. My favorite quote is “I know what it is like to play college ball”. How many times did you use that one.

hallie==This is my last post to you, and I hope everybody else get this message. You just want to be the center of attention so you keep posting idiotic comments. This weekend all you complained about was that Cassie didn’t get her team to the championship and what if Katie Scrima threw 2 no hitters. Now you make a statement: hallie lynhart
    June 15th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
JOb B – You just don’t get it do you? It’s not the talent of the player nominated nor is it whether or not the player wins the state championship. I hope everybody just stops making comments to you. You are nothing but an attention getter. Pleas everyone STOP feeding this persons “alter ego”

  21. Tony Pinciaro

    Hallie –
By the way, in baseball, football, hoops and hockey, all of the awards are voted on before the playoffs start.

So, based on your criteria, Tom Brady should not have been the 2007 NFL MVP because New England did not win the Super Bowl.

Also, A-Rod should not have been the AL MVP because the Yankees did not win the World Series.

  22. Tony Pinciaro

    Hallie –

Once again, how come you didn’t bring this topic up last year if you had a problem with Chelsea Plimpton being selected as the ‘07 Gatorade NY player of the year?

And how can you contradict yourself when you say that you had a problem with Plimpton being selected, but not with Maddy’s selection? And why do you have a problem with Cassie being selected?

I am still curious, however, you choose to evade that question.

  23. JJ Girl

Hallie i know Cassie very well. I have pitched to her and played against and he seen her play. She is one of the best players in the game and she deserves everything she gets. Its not about one person leading a team she did the best she could to get them to where they were. So dont talk about her like you know her personally. She is 18 years old just leave her alone. You cant change the process and I believe she deserves it just as much as anyone. She came back from an injury in the fall/winter and she hit better than most people in section 1. If you played, what were your stats? I’d like to know if they compare to Cassie’s.

  24. DOC

Any process that picks Cassie as the best player can’t be all that bad since the process got it right! I’m glad a player chimed in and explained something none of us fans can understand, playing against Cassie! I have onlt watched Cassie, but I have seen her play against some of the top teams in the country, never mind the state, and she never fails to help her team. This is a true player in every sense of the word, dedicated, talented, intelligent, gutsy, relentless, leader, unselfish, role mode….i could continue for hours! You are the best, Cassie! Congratulations!
