High school softball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Pearl River 4, Maine-Endwell 0

June
11

“At this point, it’s about trying to win the game and move on,” Pearl River coach Mike Carlacci said on Monday after the regional semifinal win and the Pirates do move on. The Pirates win the Class A regional final today at North Rockland High School by defeating Section 4’s Maine-Endwell 4-0. This is the second team in the history of Pearl River High School to make it to the state semifinal round so congratulations to the Pirates on a huge day for the school.

They will face Section 2’s South Glens Falls on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the BAGSAI Softball complex in Binghamton.

Once again, Katie Scrima pitches another gem allowing two-hits, a walk and struck out 12. She had the Spartan batters looking real silly.

Kelly McMorrow gave the offense a shot of life leading off the game with an inside the park home run to right center field.

Krystina Poloni had another big day at the plate going 1 for 2 with two RBI in the third inning to give the Pirates some breathing room and she reached base via an error charged to the Spartans shortstop.

The Spartans pitcher Nicole Osovski was no slouch. She pitched a four-hitter allowing four runs, a walk and struck out 11.

South Glens Falls pitcher Marissa Carpenter, 1, hugs Lauren Carruthers after the Bulldogs beat new Hartford in the Class A State Regional Final at Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury on Wednesday.

To order copies of staff-produced photos from The Post-Star, please visit http://reprints.poststar.com/. QUEENSBURY—As usual, South Glens Falls is headed to the State Softball Tournament.

And as usual, the Bulldogs are striving for more.

The Bulldogs earned their fourth straight trip to state final four on Wednesday, beating New Hartford 3-0 in a Class A state regional final at the Adirondack Sports Complex. They take on Pearl River in Saturday’s state semifinal in Binghamton at 1:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs used a mixed bag of contributions to get the job done—a three-hitter by Marissa Carpenter, a couple of infield singles during a two-run fourth, an alert play by an outfielder that cut a run down at the plate. It was good enough to get the job done, but not a dominating performance.

“I’m glad to get by it, but we’ll be working hard (today),’’ coach Laurie Ciuffetelli said. “You can’t make mistakes and win the big ones. I think we’ve got more in us than what we showed.’’

Carpenter pitched well, striking out 11 without a walk. She only went as far as three balls on one batter. But there were some difficult moments for South High, most notably in the sixth inning.

New Hartford put runners on first and second with the help of a single and an error. Brianna Pristera hit a two-out grounder, but an overthrow left the ball loose in foul territory with a runner heading home.

That’s when Ali LaRue stepped into the picture. The Bulldogs’ right fielder, backing up on the play, picked up the loose ball and threw home to catcher Amanda Perry, who put down the tag in time to end the inning.

“That was an awesome play,’’ Carpenter said.

New Hartford also had two runners on in the seventh before Carpenter got a strikeout to end the game. The Bulldogs stretched their shutout string to 23 straight innings, but it wasn’t as clean as they’d like it to be.

“We weren’t as sharp as we’ve been,’’ Ciuffetelli said.

On the good side, the Bulldogs were as scrappy as ever in pushing across their three runs. A couple of balls that died in the dirt helped them string together a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Perry led off with a solid single to left-center field. With one out, Chelsea Carruthers’ soft line drive dropped in front of second base and spun to a stop, giving the Bulldogs runners on first and third.

Alexa Toole followed with a bunt single that stopped perhaps three feet from home plate along the first-base line. The fielders weren’t quite sure what to do with the ball, and pinch runner Mackenzie Franke scored.

“I was just trying to put it into play any way I could down the line,’’ Toole said.

Kristen Funk’s groundout forced in a second run. In the sixth inning, Toole reached on an error, moved around on Funk’s single and scored on another error.

    To Joe B:

Here’s a great agrument. What if Pearl River goes on and WINS the State Class A Championship and during the process, Katie Scrima pitches back to back no hitters. Katie is then given the MVP Award at the State Championship, is selected First Team All State and State Player of the Year in Class A, all by the members of the NYS Sportswriters and Coaches Association? Shouldn’t Katie be given allot of consideration for the Gatorade State Player of the Year Award, that was given to Cassie Boccia-Reilly out of Yorktown? Would everyone not agree that Katie should be given “Equal” consideration, as would Cassie, for the Gatorade Award and let everyone voting to look at the complete body of work that all nominees are deservant of having? Again, it is not to take away from Cassie, but to give outstanding athletes like Katie Scrima a shot of getting the award as well, given how she could impact her team in 2008, towards a potential State Championship.

  7. joe b

Hallie…The softball season and its awards are not your own private little agenda. Granted Katie Scrima had an outstanding season. So did many other players throughout the state. Cassie Boscia Reilly batted .495 with 8 HR and 44 RBI. She had an obp of .578 and a slugging percantage of .923. K.Strimas strength was her pitching. Her batting stats do not compare with Reillys numbers. I don’t think the Player of the Year award in any sport is given after the NYS Championships. And if you are picking them as the State Champs, that is the KISS OF DEATH.

  8. hallie lynhart

Job B – Please get off your SOAP BOX and understand what I have said. I “NEVER” said that the softball season and its awards were my own private little agenda. So please “grow up” and don’t put words in my mouth. I’d bet that the supporters up Clarence High School, South Glens Falls HS, Bay Shore HS, etc, might have something to say about the Gatorade Player of the Year Award not being fair since their players didn’t get nominated. If, as you say, the NFCA and Gatorade can pick who they want, then maybe you can contend that this award is not as presitigious as the others. All State is for the ENTIRE YEAR, All Section is for the ENTIRE YEAR, and thus the GATORADE Award should be for the ENTIRE YEAR. Just my opinion, which I feel I have a right to make.

“K.Strimas strength was her pitching. Her batting stats do not compare with Reillys numbers”

Are you saying that a Batters Stats are more important that a Pitchers Stats? Or should they be given “Equal Weight” in order to be fair?

Thursday, May 29, 2008: Cooperstown senior earns Gatorade baseball award

Leading off today: Clemson-bound Cooperstown senior Philip Pohl has been named the Gatorade New York Baseball Player of the Year, The Daily Star reported today.
“It’s a great honor,” Pohl told the paper. “To even be considered a top player in New York is a huge honor. It’s a huge state. I’m speechless.”

A 6-foot, 195-pound catcher, Pohl is hitting .446 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. He also has 29 stolen bases for a 16-4 ballclub. Pohl hit .473 with a school-record five home runs and stole 41 bases as a junior.

Pohl sounds like a worthy candidate, but does anyone else wonder about the timing of the announcement? Sectionals are just getting started in most areas of the state, meaning a lot of players still have as many as seven or eight games to play. In addition, the cutoff for nominations and selections in order to accommodate the announcement this week was probably some time in mid-May, meaning a decision was made approximately halfway through the season.

Speaking of awards: Teresa Noyola of Palo Alto (Calif.) High was named Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The 5-foot-2 senior midfielder, a Mexican native, scored 18 goals and added seven assists in 16 games this spring.

She’s the first player named Youth, Scholar-Athlete and High School Player of the Year in the same year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the
    first two-time Parade Magazine
All the Gatorade POY awards are given before the State Play-off. Get off your high horse and get with the program.

Hallie and joe b softball is a team game and individual awards are superfluous to say the least. Katie Scrima is having a spectacular playoff run. The best analogy is comparing her to a hot goalie in the Stanley Cup playoffs. She can and is carrying her team as much as one person can. Having said that, and having coached and played on very high level teams, I think Cassie Boscia Reilly is the best hitter and most intimidating offensive force that I have seen. When you project her to the next level you will be seeing the future Alabama player in the College World Series and making an impact.
Good luck to the Pearl River team …I am pulling for you guys. Please make sure there are updates on the blog during the game.

hallie==This is my last post to you, and I hope everybody else get this message. You just want to be the center of attention so you keep posting idiotic comments. This weekend all you complained about was that Cassie didn’t get her team to the championship and what if Katie Scrima threw 2 no hitters. Now you make a statement: hallie lynhart

JOb B – You just don’t get it do you? It’s not the talent of the player nominated nor is it whether or not the player wins the state championship. I hope everybody just stops making comments to you. You are nothing but an attention getter. Pleas everyone STOP feeding this persons “alter ego”
