Coaches scholarship: Danielle Basciano, Carmel.
Also, 18 Section 1 schools earned all-NY state honors with a collective grade-point average of 90 and higher. The schools were: Haldane, Horace Greeley, Tappan Zee, Edgemont; Rye; White Plains; Ursuline; Clarkstown South; Valhalla; Hastings; Yorktown; Putnam Valley; North Rockland; Beacon; Nanuet; Pearl River; Irvington and Our Lady of Lourdes.
A few highlights on the evening:
Tuckahoe coach Pat Gallo doing a great job of raising money for the 50-50. The raffle was won by Suffern coach Jim Lloyd, who also won one of two dinners that was raffled off.
Rye Neck coach Joan Spedafino for welcoming and checking everyone into the dinner (and tolerating me).
Eastchester coach Skip Walsh and North Salem coach Bob Mittelstadt for doing good job announcing the players’ names. Check that, they did okay. They did stumble on a few names. I don’t remember if coach Walsh and coach Mittelstadt were wearing their glasses while at the microphone.
Rudy’s beau Rivage because the food was excellent.

I think that it is absolutely WONDERFUL that Section 1 Softball has scholarships named in the memory of both Tony Zimbalatti and Jim MacKenzie. Jim has a staple at Dobbs Ferry HS and was instrumental in turning their softball program around in the 90’s. He was a teacher, a leader, a gentlemen and a all around great person. Tony Zimbalatti, in the eyes of many within the Section, is “SECTION 1 SOFTBALL” Not only a dedicated Cocah at Keio, but “Zimbo” as my dad tells me everyone called him, was the former AD at Port Chester HS, who, along with Bill Shaw, started, what is considered by many in NYS as the “Grand-Daddy” of all Softball Tournaments, the James “ACE” Morabito Memorial Invitational Softball Tournament. I was fortunuate enough to be able to play in this event, while it was still held in Port Chester (now it is held up in Binghamton, NY). Mr. Zimbalatti also taught pitchers how to perfect their fast pitch skill during countless clinics that he held over the years. Great Job Coach Spedifino, Coach Walsh and Coach Mittelstadt for honoring these 2 fine gentlemen
tony do u think kristen sliman from brewster should of been at that dinner
Sliman was in-effective for a majority of the season and didn’t get hot until the last few games…maybe next year
The coaches make the picks and she didn’t even get honerable mention. She has 2 more years to play. She will have to improve a good 50 points on her batting average if she hopes to make All-Section. Just let them play and enjoy. Stop putting pressure on these young ladies.
What a wonderful gathering of young ladies. They are all smart, great ball players and all so pretty. It was a great evening!!!!
Brianna Scapperotti from Harrison only gets honorable mention and Ashley Marino gets all section. Brianna plays both ends of the game, Ashley pitches and doesn’t have as many at bats as Brianna. Not to take anything away from Ashley but Harrison only beats mediocre teams, those are the games you are supposed to win. They might have beat 3 teams with an over 500 record, there is nothing spectacular going on here. Brianna lead the team in batting all year and was the only one who produced on a regular basis. I know coaches work out deals from year to year, too bad the kids are the ones who suffer.

It’s one thing to make an all-section case for a player who you think is deserving. That’s fine.
However, don’t demean another player’s season and what she has accomplished, and don’t accuse a respected coach of making deals. How do you know coaches “work out deals from year to year?” You are a either a coach or former coach yourself.
If you are going to accuse someone of doing this, have the guts to post under your real name and not an alias.
a couple of questions about the all section process, i understand that section one decides how many players are selected from all the leagues, and also that number was reduced this year from past years, than the individual coaches from there leagues vote on the girls in that league, but what is the criteria that the section uses for determining how many canidates each league recieves. in looking at the different leagues we have anywhere from 3 to 14 players selected from there leagues. is is based on winning percentage strenght of schedule or the amount of teams in each league? also i thought in years past you had to qualify for sectionals to be eligible for the all section team, is that a new rule this year? if so i am in total agreement with it. anyone who has an answer to these questions please respond
Sandy,
I do not want to offend you, so please don’t take this as an attack because it is not meant to be. I disagree with what you say about that a player should be ineligible to be picked as All-Section when their team doesn’t make the playoffs.
There are some very good players out there who happen to be on teams that aren’t great. It would not be right to withhold this honor award from them for being on a lesser talented team.
If anything, to be able to establish yourself and maintain a high level of play under such a situation speaks volumes of how good they really are. It is not easy to be the best player on a bad team.
We can agree to disagree, but I wanted to give you a different perspective to think about.
koala fan you totally misunderstood my comment, i whole heartedly agree with you that you should not have to qualify for sections to be considered for the all section team, for all the same reasons you described. sorry for the confusion my 10th grade education is showing through. i would still like an answer to my other question if possible
Sandy,
After I re-read, sorry I did misunderstand you. I don’t know the answers to your other questions. Maybe someone who does will see it and help.
Section One was not involved in the All-Section process this season or any previous season. Section One will become involved in the procedure beginning with the 2008-2009 school year. Section One will supply (pay for) the All-Section plaques and each sport will receive a specific number of All-Section selections.
Presently, the All-Section Softball team is selected by each league’s softball coaches. The All-Section team is selected after the All-League team has been finalized. Each coach at the meeting submits the player’s names from his/her team that he/she feels deserves All-League. A consensus vote by the League’s coaches finalizes the All-League Team. The process is repeated, using the names of the All-League players only, to select that League’s All-Section and All-Section Honorable Mention players.
I do not know what the criteria will be for All-Section selections for next school year.
The All-League plaques have always been supplied by Section One.
