Sectional thoughts

With one day (Tuesday) remaining in the regular season, the sectionals have all but taken shape. The sectional seeding meeting is Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. Any outbracket games will be played Thursday with the first round in Class AA, Class A and, possibly, Class B (depending on the amount of teams entered) going Friday.
Section 1 softball chairman Tony Toronto sent the seeding criteria to me:
AA School against
Win Tie AA 4 2 A 4 2 B 4 2 C 4 2 D 4 2A School against
AA 5 2.5 A 4 2 B 4 2 C 4 2 D 4 2B School against
AA 6 3 A 5 2.5 B 4 2 C 4 2 D 4 2C School against
AA 7 3.5 A 6 3 B 5 2.5 C 4 2 D 4 2 The seeding position of a team is calculated by: total number of points earned (Section 1 games only) = Section 1 index total number of Section 1 games played The highest index is the top seed in each class. Now, don’t ask me to seed the teams because I am not sure about all of the records, however, I will project what I think will be the top four seeds.
Here we go:
Class AA:
The top four seeds will probably be John Jay-East Fishkill, R.C. Ketcham, John Jay and Scarsdale. The remainder of the Class AA field will include: Yorktown, Ursuline, Mamaroneck, Yonkers, Arlington, White Plains, Clarkstown North, North Rockland, Carmel, Mahopac, Suffern and Clarkstown South.
Final: John Jay-East Fishkill vs. Yorktown.
Class A:
The first four seeds will be Pearl River, Hen Hud, Easatcehster and Lakeland. The rest of Class A looks like this: Pelham, Brewster, Nyack, Sleepy Hollow, Harrison, Tappan Zee, Beacon, Ardsley and possibly, Our Lady of Lourdes.
Final: Pearl River vs. Hen Hud.
Class B:
The first four seeds will be: Albertus Magnus, Westlake, Dobbs Ferry and North Salem. Class B will be rounded out by Rye Neck, Kennedy, Hastings, Briarcliff and Putnam Valley.
Final: Albertus Magnus vs. Westlake.
Class C:
Three teams will vie for the title with Haldane drawing the top seed, followed by Valhalla and Blind Brook.
Final: Haldane vs. Valhalla.
I will have the sectional pairings posted Wednesday following the seeding meeting.

I think the finals prediction for Class B is partially correct. Albertus Magnus is a strong team and will probably, without a doubt make it to the finals. However, Westlake has potential but is being over rated here, having good comptetiors in Putnam Valley and Kennedy.
In the AA I like North Rockland as the surprise team to make the finals. Strong pitching will be the key to their success… final- Yorktown vs. NR.
Tony … In AA I can’t see Scarsdale getting a top 4 seed. They only won 2 games of any significance, Mahopac & White Plains, who avenged that loss last week. They also lost to Arlington, Suffern, Carmel and Harrison. North Rockland or Yorktown should be seeded higher than Scarsdale, with Yorktown getting the nod on thier win at NR.
Arlington should also get some consideration for the top 4 seeds.
Joe B.
I completely agree with you. However it is my understanding that it is your section 1 wins that determines your seeding. Scarsdale has 19 section 1 wins. So if that is how they do it, Scarsdale will be number 1.
My daughter is only a freshman so I am not 100% sure, but it is what I was told was how the seeding works. We’ll all know tomorrow afternoon. Good luck to everyone in the playoffs.
Take nothing away from a fine season for a very young Scarsdale team. Only 1 senior. I just don’t think they will be a force with teams like Suffern, N. Rockland, Carmel, Arlington, RCK, JJEF, JJCR, White Plains and Yorktown in their division. Dave & Kevin do a great job with the girls. I think next year may be their year. Not this. Good Luck just the same.
I don’t think Yorktown will make it to finals. They’ve had a good season, but some what of a let down, having lost a significant amount of games. Class AA will be great sectionals to watch, with truly any team winning on any given day. Good luck to all
Tony … Why are the up county teams in AA so secretive about thier stats. Even Max/Preps can’t get anything from them. Nobody knows thier actual records. Even the Poughkeepsie Journal doesn’t have it. RCK, JJEF and Arlington are the culprits. Hen Hud and Yorktown beat Arlington. N. Rockland beat Ketcham and JJEF. But there were no stats entered for those games by the up county schools.
Tony …. Speaking of stats , what happened to Magnus’s stats? They all got wiped out after the Edgemont game. Their stats only reflect one game – vs Edgemont.
Joe B. and AM Fan –
Joe B., RCK, JJEF and Arlington are not in our coverage area and I am not sure if the Poughkeepsie Journal uses Max Preps/Varsity Central. It is always frustrating because they don’t supply records to our coaches.
AM Fan, I don’t know what happened with Albertus’ stats. I will check on that Wednesday after the seeding meeting.
Just a thought….
Since Arlington, JJ EF, and Ketchum are Section 1 and every other team in Section 1 use MaxPreps, shouldn’t there be a way that through the Section 1 administration they should be required to use the same system as every other team in the section?
Pick’r Off –
The Dutchess County teams are not in the Journal News coverage area. The Section 1 teams in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties encompass our coverage area so we use MaxPreps/Varsity Central. This has nothing to do with Section 1 administration. This is the Journal News’ decisions to use MaxPreps/Varsity Central.
The Poughkeepsie Journal covers the Dutchess County teams and I don’t think they use MaxPreps.
Pick’r Off I agree with you. It seems likes this happens every year. Everyone needs to get on the same page. Section 1 should mandate ALL teams to report ALL their games on Max Preps.
Tony P. I think the magic question here is why does the Poughkeepsie Journal chooses not to use Max Preps? Can you find out why? Maybe the two papers should work together to solve this problem.
Slapper –
Once again, Section 1 has nothing to do with this.
That is not my call. If you have a question as to why the P’keepsie Journal chooses not to use MaxPreps, then you should call them.
The team coaches can elect to use MaxPreps… they can register and get access to input their team data.
I have to laugh about all this talk concerning stats. Check out the Haldane vs. Rye Neck BB stats for both teams. RN shows they gave up 7BB while Haldane only shows 6BB. Now to really confuse all of us, Haldane shows their pitcher gave up 3BB while RN shows 4BB. Oh it gets better, the head coach for Haldane has the same last name as the pitcher. Is that the pitchers dad, uncle, brother or just a coincidence? Good Luck to all the teams in the playoffs this weekend!
just to correct something in one of Joe B’s posts above . . . Arlington did not lose to Hen Hud and Yorktown. Both of those teams beat the Arlington B team, not the varsity A team. Arlington finished 15-5, losing to Ketcham (twice) JJEF, Carmel and Pine Plains (not section 1). They beat White Plains, Scarsdale, Suffern, Pearl River and North Rockland.

This is what is printed in Max/Prep for Arlington. It doesn’t say anything about A or B team.
Maxpreps is wrong as to Arlington’s record. They have combined the records of two distinct teams—Arlington A and Arlington B—against the Westchester and Putnam teams. Arlington A did not play Hen Hud, Lakeland, Beacon, Brewster or Yorktown. All of those games were against Arlington B.
Arlington High School has two Varsity teams?
According to BOCES, they do have 2 varsity teams. That just makes it more confusing. They post B team scores but not the A team.
Arlington has a varsity A team and a varsity B team. The B team played mostly Class A teams, but they do not have a post-season (no sectionals). The A team is the “regular” varsity team (Class AA). (They also have 2 JV teams).
The Arlington coaches do not submit anything to Maxpreps (Why, I do not know). What appears there are the results from games where either team plays a Westchester or Rockland team, without distincton as to whether it was the A team or the B team.
all teams should be required to accurately post there teams record so that the opposing coaches players and fans could see exactly where they stand in regards to the sectional playoffs. as for the posting of individual stats, i believe you will find that the home team as a whole give up considerably less earned runs and have a much higher batting avg. than when on the road. is this just a coincidence?
I don’t think there is any central location for the posting of scores. Maxpreps is a commercial site that some teams use and some don’t. Their info is not reliable. I know that Arlington (where my daughter goes) keeps their scores up to date on their web site, so anyone can see the results there.
As to stats, for the reasons you stated, HS stats are meaningless. Most of the people keeping score do not know how to do so (for example, hit vs. error, earned vs. unearned run, home run vs. single and 3-base error) and if you check the boxscores in 2 different papers (when a Dutchess team plays a Westchester team), the numbers are always different depending which coach called in the results.
what about the yonkers high schools – any team make the sectionals?
