High school softball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Come sectional time, Class AA is wide open

May
15

With two weeks remaining in the regular season one thing is certain, there is no clear-cut favorite for the Class AA title.

I know this is going to anger North Rockland fans, especially Rockland Softball and Pick’r Off.

I agree that North Rockland is playing excellent ball right now and has one of the best 1-2 windmilling combos in Samantha Welsh and Krystn Benson, but as I have seen before, strange things happen during sectional. In 2005, John Jay-East Fishkill entered sectionals off of a sub-par regular season in which it played a killer schedule. John Jay was either a 12th or 13th seed,if I remember corretly, and it stormed to the title, beating John Jay and Ali Gardiner in the title game.

Based on this, don’t ever count out John Jay-EF or fellow Dutchess County schools Arlington and R.C. Ketcham because they are always tough and these three teams beat up on each other during the regular season.

These three teams, along with North Rockland, Suffern, Clarkstown North, White Plains, John Jay-Cross River, Carmel, and, let’s not forget defending sectional champ Yorktown, will al be in the mix. Add in Scarsdale and Yonkers, which have all but clinched sectional berths, and I think Mahopac is either close to one or has already stamped a sectional ticket.

There will excellent games from the opening round right through to the final. It will come down to what team executes better and gets the breaks.

And this weekend, defending champion Tappan Zee, Yorktown, Brewster and John Jay-East Fishkill will head to Binghamton for the prestigious Morabito tournament.

Double AA is wide open, especially with Yorktown being swept by Lakeland recently. Don’t ever overlook the Ducthess County teams – Ketcham, John Jay-EF and Arlington – because they are always tough.

  1. let's play that game

the putnam valley girls softball team is a class act group. ive never seen a team with so much sportsmanship and persistence. unfortunately the same can’t be said about some of their opponents…i wont mention names. go tigers!

  2. Pick'r Off

It’s just good to hear that Class AA is wide open and its not just Yorktowns title. There are alot of good teams in AA and I think it great that you are mentioning all of these teams. I’ve watched alot of games over the years and know that in softball anything can happen and don’t count on the win until the last out has been made.

Very nice update on AA… How about the A league which seems to be a little more competitive than AA this year!
Also, when will the seedings come out? Thanks

It certainly appears as if Class AA in Section 1 is wide open. Those 2 recent back to back loses to Lakeland, brings Yorktown into a new prospective. However, it will certainly be interesting to see how well Yorktown does this weekend up in Binghamton. John Jay (EF) is on a roll up in Dutchess County as of late and they will be another team to look at this weekend at the Morabito. Every year there appears to be a team that comes out of being a lower seed, who makes allot of noise come sectionals. Last year, White Plains, in a so called rebuliding year did very well. Same goes for JJEF, as Tony clearly indicated, back in 2005.

As a side note, for Class A, it looks to be Pearl River’s title to lose. But, if teams like Tappan Zee, Brewster and Lourdes can get on a roll (Similiar to what TZ did 2 years ago), these teams might make some noise come sectionals. And, don’t ever count out Hen Hud!!!

Anyone have any predictions on how our Section 1 Teams (Yorktown, JJEF, Brewster and Tappan Zee) will do this weekend at the Morabito Tournament?

actually, let’s play that game, I have watched Putnam Valley play a couple games and have noticed that their attitudes were surprisingly bad, considering they had a lot to say about Kennedy’s sportsmanship. I think that if they are going to call another team out on their behavior, they should watch their own…

Tony … FYI .. Hen Hud got a big lift for the playoff run with the return of Shanna Brown tonight. She got the OK to start hitting and she should be ready to take over her spot at ss just in time for the sectionals. This has to be a major boost for the Lady Sailors.

Good evaluation of AA. It should be very interesting come playoff time. There is good pitching everywhere you look in the section

Thanks for the update on Shanna Brown. That is a HUGE lift for Hen Hud, which has played well in her absence. Hen Hud and coach John Glashoff deserve plenty of credit for still playing excellent ball without Brown. Her return thrusts Hen Hud back to the forefront, along with Pearl River, for the Class A title.

Don’t forget Tappan Zee, Brewster, Lakeland (which swept Yorktown), Eastchester and Beacon.
