Gaby Torzilli had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings and finished with a one-hitter and 15 strikeouts in a 2-1 win. Harrison’s Breanne Arlotta surrendered a pair of first-inning runs, then settled in. She finished with four strikeouts and scattered eight hits.
Brianna Scaperotti broke up Torzilli’s no-hit bid with a triple to deep left field. She came in on Sam Mumola’s infield out.
John Jay scored twice in the first inning on a throwing error and a Torzilli sacrifice fly. This was Torzilli’s fourth consecutive game with double digit strikeouts. She has 56 during this stretch, which also coincides with a John Jay four-game winning streak.
John Jay will host Brittni Alexander, Tayla Gardner, Kayla Meyer and Tappan Zee Thursday.

May I suggest: A trip to Cross River Thursday where Tappan Zee and John Jay will match up. Three of Section 1’s best will be playing in this game with Tappan Zee’s Brittni Alexander and Tayla Gardner and John Jay’s Gaby Torzilli.

Today at the Yorktown Beacon game, Paula Devito made one of the nicest catches I’ve seen in HS ball! When Ytown was up 3-1, Beacon had 2 runners on and a Beacon player(sorry I don’t know her name) hit a long towering shot. It looked like Beacon was going to take the lead as the ball sailed over the fence. Devito timed it perfectly and leaped for the ball as it was leaving the field. A spectacular catch that saved the game! Very easy to talk about hits, rbi’s and strikeouts. Great defense doesn’t always make the news(Although it did today in the JJ game as well)
Great catch Paula!
Just curious are there any surprise teams this year that are doing good who weren’t expected to be doing this well?
JFK has to be the surprise team of the year. Nobody expected them to be 10-4 at this time of the season. However they still have to prove themselves this weekend in the N. Salem tourney and then face Put Valley. Thier biggest game of the year will come when they take a giant step up in competition against Carmel HS on May 21. This team is good enough to make it to the Sectional finals. And should be one of the top 4 seeds in B.
a couple of more surprise teams have to be RYE and SCARSDALE both teams are playing very well. i also agree with joe b kennedy is a big surprise i just dont think they have enough fire power to go all the way. keep an eye on westlake in class B started out 1 and 5 now playing 500 ball. very young team with a new coach they also have 2 wins over kennedy this year
