Ursuline’s Pirone 4-hits Nyack

April
21

Freshman Taylor Pirone tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11 in a 6-0 win over Nyack, giving the Koalas a split of the League II-B set. Nyack bested Ursuline, 9-1 last week.

Pirone, a New Rochelle resident, struck out Nyack’s first two hitters, and just kept rolling. Pirone’s fastball was rocking, her changeup was dancing and her drop pitch was devastating.

Nyack had the bases loaded with one out in the sixth inning, primed to climb back into the game, but Pirone dropped in. The final two outs were on called strikes, both times on a drop pitch.

Pirone gave Ursuline a 1-0 lead in the first inning, tripling to deep center, then scampering home as a result of an errant relay throw. Ursuline increased its lead to 3-0 in the third as Nicole Vitulli singled and came home Pirone’s single and error, which allowed Pirone to race around the bases.

Pirone and Nina Curto both went 3 for 3. Curto added a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Ursuline rightfielder Courtney Bellissimo initiated an inning-ending double play in the fourth. Bellissimo snagged a fly ball, then threw out a Nuack baserunner attempting to go from second to third.

In other Westchester/Putnam action on Monday: Rye Neck’s Jamie Ianello threw a five-inning no-hitter and Jessica Calvani drove in a career-high six runs in a win over Pawling. … John Jay’s Gaby Torzilli threw a three-hitter with seven strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in a 3-0 loss to R.C. Ketcham. … Chloe Giordano and Deirdre McGrath smoked home runs and McGrath knocked in three in Holy Child’s 12-2 thumping of Hamden Hall. … Our Lady of Victory’s Samantha Sherding allowed four hits and fanned seven in a 5-1 win over Cardinal Spellman. … Brewster dropped a 6-2 decision to Beacon, but Lindsay Goff had an RBI double and Kim Bentson had two hits. … Casey Moen slammed a home run and drove in five runs and sister Carly Moen had two hits and three RBI in Maria Regina’s slam of St. Catharine’s.

Games to watch this week (4/21-4/27)

April
19

Monday: Beacon at Brewster. Beacon edged Brewster last week, 1-0, so the Bears will be primed to even the set. Beacon will probably face lefty Kelly Bentson.

kelly-bentson.jpg

Nanuet at Albertus Magnus: The Rockland matchup features two schools approximately two miles apart. The Golden Knights gave first-year coach Tony Toronto his first win of the season recently.

Tuesday: May I suggest you write this down NOW. North Rockland will be the site of excellent softball as the Red Raiders host Yorktown, a noon start, and Hen Hud, a 2 p.m. Yorktown has two of Section 1’s most imposing and intimidating hitters in Cassie Reilly-Boccia and Kasey O’Connor. Hen Hud can boast of its offensive force in catcher Kirby Wright. Each team has outstanding windmilling — Hen Hud’s Niki Tamburri, Yorktown’s Larissa Porcelli and North Rockland’s Samantha Welsh and Krystn Benson — which could lend itself to low-scoring games.

Wednesday: Lakeland is off to Brewster. The Lakeland-Brewster games are always well-played. … John Jay and Gaby Torzilli go to Ursuline to face a young Koalas team, led by freshmen windmillers Taylor Pirone and Kristen Rodopoulos.

Thursday: John Jay and Gaby Torzilli face a difficult test Thursday at Pearl River. The Pirates have a hard-hitting offense, spearheaded by Jackie Bruno, Krystina Poloni and Kelly McMorrow.

Friday: North Rockland and Tappan Zee meet up for what will be a good game featuring a trio of excellent pitchers in Samantha Welsh and Krystn Benson and Tappan Zee’s Tayla Gardner.

Albertus Magnus 11, Hastings 1

April
19

I realize this is the first time I saw Albertus Magnus play, but I will go on record and say that the Falcons will defend their Section 1 Class B title the first weekend in June.

Why do I say this? Here is my reasoning. The Falcons have three excellent pitchers in Erin Flaherty, Maura Power and Rosie Coyne, who can handcuff any team. Yes, I know Rye edged Albertus, 8-7, but the teams will see each other again.

Today, Power had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 and finished with a two-hitter and nine strikeouts. Putting it plain and simple, Power was bringing the heat. And, she sprinkled in a dancing changeup along with the high velocity.

maura-power.jpg

Power’s no-hit bid, at the time, was preserved in the fourth inning when centerfielder Jackie Kelly fought off the blinding sun to catch a sinking line drive, then whip a throw to first base, which was handled nicely by Flaherty.

Hastings’ Lauren Harris foiled the no-hit bid by sneaking a single between Flaherty and the bag with two outs in the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, Albertus was collecting hits, 12 in all, led by Kelly and catcher Erin Harding. Kelly went 4 for 4, scored three runs and drove in one, and Harding added three hits, two runs and three RBI. Before I forget, if you get a chance, go to an Albertus game to see these two fine pitchers, as well as Harding.

The sophomore first-year starter handled Power well and possesses a strong arm. Oh, and Harding is left-handed.

Before I begin, congratulations to Hackley coach Julianne Puente for winning her 150th career game, with her team’s 12-5 triumph over Fieldston. Rachel Gottesman went 4 for 4 with two RBI.

In other action Friday: Holy Child’s Chloe Giordano continued her torrid pace, going 3 for 4, including a home run, and knocking four in a 10-7 win over Grenwich Academy. … Maria Regina’s Kerry McPartlan had a day to remember, belting two homers and driving in nine runs in a victory over Cardinal Spellman. … Harrison’s Ashley Marino tossed a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Sam Mumola had three RBI in the Huskies’ win over Byram Hills. … Pearl River’s Kaitlin Dinet allowed three hits and drove in two runs in a win over Sleepy Hollow. Jackie Bruno homered and knocked in two for the Pirates.

Sleepy Hollow’s Allaire Primiano tripled in two runs. … Rye’s Kira Hessekiel threw a no-hitter against Woodlands. …Nanuet gave first-year coach Tony Toronot his first win with a 10-7 triumph over Irvington as Noelle Lopopolo and Nisha Flinn each drove in three wins.

Clarkstown North 15, New Rochelle 7

April
16

It was only two years ago in the Class AA semifinals when the Rams and the Huguenots faced off on the diamond in a classic pitchers dual for the Rams which seems like a lifetime ago.

But at New Rochelle High School, the new look Rams and Huguenots (without Deanna Minuto and Jillian Schoenberg) put on an offensive clinic yesterday with the Rams winning 15-7.

Jordan Kapnick went 3 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Rams. Melanie Culpepper provided the big blow in the game with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to break the game open and cap off a four run inning. I was really impressed with pitcher Kristen Martini. She went the distance but it wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination. But what she did do was battle in each inning she did settle down. After the five run bottom of the first that gave New Rochelle the 5-3 lead, Martini only allowed two more runs in six innings.

The Huguenots can take a lot of positives out of this game and that from the pitching performance of Jamie Zakalik. The stats don’t show it (6 inn., one walk, 10 hits, 10 runs, 7 earned, and struck out eight) but after the third inning when the score 9-5, Zakalik kept the Rams at bay and kept the Huguenots alive. They got a solid day at the plate from shortstop Ashley Dizenzo going 2 for 2 with two RBI and she was on base every time she was at the plate.

But the one thing I have to say about the Huguenots batting, Angela Trozzi in the first inning… she had an RBI triple, but she took a pitch from Martini that was at her eyes and took it to right centerfield. I was very impressed with that hit but the pitch was at her eyes.

It was a great offensive show put on by both teams and read more about my story in the paper and on lohud.com
