High school softball in the Lower Hudson Valley

Suffern wins 2-1 over North Rockland

April
30

Going into the game, this was going to be a pitcher’s dual from the start with Catrina Delgais in the circle for the Mounties and either Krystn Benson or Samantha Welsh going for North Rockland. This time it was Benson and both pitcher’s did well. Suffern won the game 2-1 at Suffern High School.

The Mounties had been hitting the cover out of the ball going back to April 17 against Scarsdale but Benson gave up only six. She allowed two runs, three walks and struck out 11. Delgais allowed a run, two hits, four walks and struck out nine that bumped her Section 1 leading totals in strike outs to 126.

Both teams had struggled to get some hits early on but in the bottom of the third, after Jen Proietti-Fox hit a single to short right center, advanced to second on a passed ball then was sacrificed over by Kelly Macchia; Allie Gonzalez, who early on in the at bat gets hit in the face mask, takes the ball to left field to drive in the first run of the game. Their second run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Danielle Conklin drove in pinch runner Makenzi Cella.

North Rockland got on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by second baseman Samantha Welsh driving in pinch hitter Felicia Badillo.

This would be the second game in a row for the Red Raiders that they have seen some top notch pitching and they’ll be facing R.C. Ketcham on Friday and Suffern will play Clarkstown North on Saturday.

In other Rockland news… Kaitlin Dinet allowed two hits, and struck out 11 in the win for Pearl River over Hastings. Teammate Jackie Bruno had a three-run home run and four RBI. …Molly Meehan went 4 for 5 with a double, a triple, and had an RBI in the Albertus Magnus win over Nanuet. … Dana Kurti’s seventh inning home run in the seventh gave Clarkstown South the insurance run in their 3-1 win over Carmel. Teammate Julianne Skraptis had an RBI single in the sixth to give the Vikings the lead. Danielle Basciano’s home run in the fourth gave the Rams the 1-0 lead. … Kayla Meyer went 2 for 4 with a three-run home run in the seventh inning and had three RBI for Tappan Zee in the 7-3 win over Horace Greeley.

Typical NR game. Low scoring game on the edge of your seat right to the end.

NR has played a tough early schedule, hopefully it will help in the long run.

  2. WOW

Isn’t Yonkers 0-3? We need Tony to go to the top teams!!!! Have we gone this far out of whack that parents are now raving about the winless?

WOW…in case you haven’t noticed. Parents are always raving about thier kids on all these blogs. It a parents right. You are right Yonkers is 0-3 but they have played tough competition quite well. White Plains, 1-0, and North Rockland, 4-0. Their other loss was to Ketcham, 12-0, who handed Yorktown their first loss. Just because a player is on a winning or power team does not give someone exclusive rights to mention their child.

  4. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

We’re all very proud of our kids and sometimes a bit one sided. Personally as a parent it’s nicer to her great things from other people rather than trying to build a case for your child.

  5. meg serraro

I believe they also lost big to JJ East Fishkill too.

    fyi
The game that Yonkers lost to White Plains 1-0 was pitched by a 7th grader.

  7. slapper

fyi, In case you did not know White Plains pitcher Lauren Sputo is in 9th grade. Says alot about both pitchers. There is a good group of young pitchers out there. I wish them all the best.

  8. ROCKLAND SOFTBALL

Don’t forget TZ’s young pitcher and North Rockland’s two young pitchers.

  9. Ballfielder

Who cares what grade they are in, as long as they are out there having fun playing the game they love. And to all those parents out there suppporting their child, Thank God you care!
