What an amazing game over at Tappan Zee High School which was a true pitchers duel with Tayla Gardner for the Dutchies and North Rockland’s Krystn Benson up until the eighth inning.
With a runner on second, Brittni Alexander took an 0-2 curve just clearing the left field fence to win the game for the Dutchies 2-1 in the eighth inning. Designated player Kellie Yano got on base on an error in right. After pinch hitter Christine Kopf struck out which brought Alexander up to bat. Alexander had been struggling all day against Benson going 0 for3 up until that point.
When talking with Gardner, she knew from the crack of the bat that the ball would be going over the fence but from the way the crowd and her coach Gene Kousoulas reacted when it was hit; no one was that certain.
For the first seven innings this really was a pitcher’s duel. Gardner and Benson were matching each other out for out. Benson’s no-hiter was broken up in the bottom of the fourth inning by a double to left off the bat of Kayla Meyer. Gardner’s perfect game was broken up in the top of the sixth by single off the bat of Nicole Greene.
The Red Raiders were able to strike first in the eighth inning beginning with Greene’s hit to shortstop. From my angle, I couldn’t tell if Dutchies first baseman Lisa Bates was pulled off the bag but Greene was ruled safe. Greene advanced to second on a passed ball and she came around to score on a double to right field by second baseman Samantha Welsh.
Gardner allowed a run, six hits, a walk, and 12 strike outs. Benson allowed only one earned run, three hits, two walks, and struck out 14.
North Rockland jumps into league on Monday against Suffern, while the Dutchies play Urusline tomorrow.
