Suffern wins 2-1 over North Rockland

April
30

Going into the game, this was going to be a pitcher’s dual from the start with Catrina Delgais in the circle for the Mounties and either Krystn Benson or Samantha Welsh going for North Rockland. This time it was Benson and both pitcher’s did well. Suffern won the game 2-1 at Suffern High School.

Delgais allowed a run, two hits, four walks and struck out nine that bumped her Section 1 leading totals in strike outs to 126.

Both teams had struggled to get some hits early on but in the bottom of the third, after Jen Proietti-Fox hit a single to short right center, advanced to second on a passed ball then was sacrificed over by Kelly Macchia; Allie Gonzalez, who early on in the at bat gets hit in the face mask, takes the ball to left field to drive in the first run of the game. Their second run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Danielle Conklin drove in pinch runner Makenzi Cella.

North Rockland got on the board in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by second baseman Samantha Welsh driving in pinch hitter Felicia Badillo.

Games to watch beginning Tuesday

April
28

It’s unfortunate that Mother Nature intervened today because the North Rockland-Suffern game would have been a good one.

Tuesday: Ursuline travels to John Jay for the second game in the league set. Last week, Ursuline’s Tyler Pirone tossed a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory. Gaby Torzilli allowed one hit and struck out 13. … Lakeland will host Brewster in the back end of the league set. Lakeland overcame a five-run, sixth-inning Brewster rally last week to beat the Bears, 6-5.

Wednesday: If you have free time on this day, make the trip to Montrose for the Yorktown-Hen Hud game. This game will feature four of Section 1’s finest — Yorktown’s Cassie Reilly-Boccia and Kasey O’Connor and Hen Hud’s Kirby Wright and Niki Tamburri. One Yorktown player who gets overlooked is pitcher Larissa Porcelli, who has been swinging a hot bat. … North Rockland goes to Suffern on this day. Suffern’s Catrina Delgais will match up with either Samantha Welsh or Krystn Benson. Zeroes will be a plentiful.

Thursday: Rockland County is the place to be today with Suffern and Pearl River facing off and the Clarkstowns — North and South — meeting up. … In Westchester, New Rochelle and Scarsdale meet for the first time this season. The teams are battling perennial champ White Plains for the league title. Keep an eye on New Rochelle’s Kehli Washington and Scarsdale’s Chelsea LoBue.

Friday: Hen Hud at Yorktown. Enough said. … Arlington comes to White Plains in what will be a good game. Arlington is always strong, as are all of the Dutchess County Class AA schools.

Saturday: Pelham and Briarcliff have their respective tournaments. … Maria Regina will challenge itself with a game at Eastchester. … Suffern and Clarkstown North meet up in a key league game.

Tappan Zee wins in extra-innings 2-1

April
25

What an amazing game over at Tappan Zee High School which was a true pitchers duel with Tayla Gardner for the Dutchies and North Rockland’s Krystn Benson up until the eighth inning.

With a runner on second, Brittni Alexander took an 0-2 curve just clearing the left field fence to win the game for the Dutchies 2-1 in the eighth inning. Designated player Kellie Yano got on base on an error in right. After pinch hitter Christine Kopf struck out which brought Alexander up to bat. Alexander had been struggling all day against Benson going 0 for3 up until that point.

When talking with Gardner, she knew from the crack of the bat that the ball would be going over the fence but from the way the crowd and her coach Gene Kousoulas reacted when it was hit; no one was that certain.

For the first seven innings this really was a pitcher’s duel. Gardner and Benson were matching each other out for out. Benson’s no-hiter was broken up in the bottom of the fourth inning by a double to left off the bat of Kayla Meyer. Gardner’s perfect game was broken up in the top of the sixth by single off the bat of Nicole Greene.

The Red Raiders were able to strike first in the eighth inning beginning with Greene’s hit to shortstop. From my angle, I couldn’t tell if Dutchies first baseman Lisa Bates was pulled off the bag but Greene was ruled safe. Greene advanced to second on a passed ball and she came around to score on a double to right field by second baseman Samantha Welsh.

Gardner allowed a run, six hits, a walk, and 12 strike outs. Benson allowed only one earned run, three hits, two walks, and struck out 14.

North Rockland jumps into league on Monday against Suffern, while the Dutchies play Urusline tomorrow.

Her teammate Amanda Babcock went 2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI, two runs, and had two stolen bases. This will set up tomorrow’s match up with Tappan Zee which could be a good pitcher’s duel.

Then over at Albertus Magnus, Kristen Martini allowed a hit and struckout 14 in a 7-0 win for Clarkstown North over the Falcons. Jackie Kelly broke up the no-hitter in the sixth inning. Jordan Kapnick went 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for the Rams.

Lakeland 6, Brewster 5

April
23

Brittany Lischinsky doubled in the winning run in the seventh inning,, lifting Lakeland to a 6-5 win over Brewster.

brittany.jpg

Brewster scored five runs in the sixth inning to even the score at 5-5. The big hit was a monstrous Kim Bentston two-run triple to deep center field. Bentson scored the equalizer on a Megan Hill sacrifice fly. During the inning, Lakeland coach Steve Fallo brought in Alex Oakes in relief of Lischinsky, who pitched 5 1/3 innings. Lischinsky shut out Brewster through five innings, as the Bears stranded eight baserunnes, including seven in scoring position. Lischinsky, who moved to second base after Oakes came in, admitted after the game she had tired a little in the 6th and didn’t mind being removed for Oakes.

Lakeland’s hitting star was first baseman Tori Jarosz, who doubled in her first two at-bats, singled and then was unintentionally, intentionally walked. Jarosz had an RBI double in the second and a two-run double in the third.

Porcelli pounds the ball: Yorktown’s Larissa Porcelli went 4 for 4 and scored three runs and Tori Matzura had two hits and three RBI in a victory over Our Lady of Lourdes. Dana Bisaccia whiffed 10 in six innings and allowed three hits.

Duel in New Rochelle: John Jay seniorGaby Torzilli and Ursuline freshman Taylor Pirone hooked up in an old-fashioned windmillers’ duel with Pirone and Ursuline prevailing, 2-1. Pirone only allowed a fifth-inning single and fanned 12 while Torzilli surrendered two hits and struck out 13.

In other Westchester and Putnam action: Amanda Halstead had three hits, including a home run in Mahopac’s win over East Ramapo. … Kerry McPartland doubled and tripled among her four hits and she knocked in six runs in Maria Regina’s victory over Aquinas. … Marni O’Shea blasted two home runs, including a grand salami, finished with five RBI and scored four runs as Our Lady of Victory beat St. Catharine’s. … Hayley Bingham blasted a home run to highlight a seven-run eighth inning as Dobbs Ferry overcame Pawling. Winning pitcher Jacqueline Crews K’d 16. … Molly Schauber drove in three runs as Holy Child and Brearley played to a 9-9 draw. The game was suspended because of time constraints.

Star of the day: Future Brewster softball player, 6-year-old Madison Chiudina, who served as bat girl for today’s Brewster-Lakeland softball game.

Don’t forget North Rockland on Tuesday

April
21

Just in case anyone has forgotten, North Rockland will host Yorktown (noon) and Hen Hud (2 p.m.) Tuesday in what will be a great doubleheader.

I’m curious to know if North Rockland coach Michelle Shaw will throw Samantha Welsh at Yorktown or go with Krystn Benson again the Cornhuskers.

Imagine if North Rockland was allowed to charge admission for this doubleheader? The program would make enough money to fund a 2009 spring-training trip.

I am disappointed because I will miss these games. I will be the office Tuesday from 10 am to 6 pm. If I was working a night shift, I would have been at these games as a fan.

Hopefully I will be able to get the result from Yorktown coach Becky Melikian after the game, and the same for Hen Hud head man John Glashoff.
