A thank you and any Empire Games players?

June
18

I just wanted to echo everything Tony said and extend my own thank you to all the players, coaches and parents who made what Tony and I do possible this season. Thanks to everyone for all the returned phone calls and interviews. We really appreciate it -especially when on deadline, you have no idea how important that is to us so thank you so much to everyone for always talking to us.

And a thank you to Tony for being a great battery mate on the blog and in softball coverage! Both of us truly love covering softball and any of our colleagues who heard us talking in the office on any given day can attest to it, as we talked about softball everyday :).

And it was an amazing season of softball and I feel lucky to have been covering the talent in the Lower Hudson Valley. I think that talent is obvious in that this year was my second consecutive season following one of our area teams to the state final four. Tappan Zee last year and Hen Hud this year. I was always proud to tell another reporter I was from Westchester and covering Section 1 teams!

The season really seemed to just fly by and I can’t wait for next year. I hope everyone has a great summer of travel ball and please do not hesitate to email me or Tony and let us know if any girls sign with colleges.

I also have one last request – is anyone on the Hudson Valley softball team for the Empire State Games this summer or know of anyone who is? I’m writing a preview and would love to talk to anyone who is.

Thanks again everyone for a memorable 2007 season. Here’s to a great summer and the winter passing quickly :).

Thank you coaches, parents and players.

June
12

Erin and I were honored to be invited to the All-Section dinner tonight. It is always a wonderful dinner, highlighting the players’ accomplishments on the season. Congratulations to all of the players tonight on your awards.

We were caught off guard though, by Pleasantville coach Gina Perino when she threw an 0-2 changeup past us. (We were expecting a riseball.) Perino complimented the job that Erin and I did covering softball this season. Thank you Gina for the nice words.

I do want to point out though, that it is the coaches, parents and players who deserve a huge thank you. If it wasn’t for the tremendous cooperation from these three groups, from coaches helping us with phone numbers, to parents giving their daughter a message that we called, to the player returning our call and being a great interview, then Erin and I would not be able to do our jobs.

I want to give a shout out to the players. Girls, after a long, taxing day of schoolwork followed by either a tough practice or game, the last thing you ladies need is a reporter, specifically an old, scary-looking individual such as myself, calling you at home for an interview or a post-game interview.

To all of the players I interviewed this season, whether it was after a game or by phone, thank you for always being cooperative with me and being great interviews.

I have received thank you’s from parents this season, which is appreciated, however, I always let them know that it was their daughter who did all the work. I had the easy part in that all I had to do was write about it.

Coaches, parents and players, thanks again for making the 2007 softball season enjoyable from a coverage standpoint.

Looking ahead to 2008

June
10

Wow. This softball season flew by. It just seemed like yesterday Erin and I were kicking around ideas for our blog name. Now, the all-section dinner on Tuesday will officially signify the season’s conclusion.

I’ll echo Erin’s congratulations to Hen Hud and coach John Glashoff, who is one of the classiest coaches you will find. And let’s not forget a congratulations to Yorktown (Class AA), Albertus Magnus (Class B) and Dobbs Ferry (Class C) for their championships. And congratulations to all of the Section 1 players for another great season. To the seniors, thank you for everything you have done for your team and Section 1 and all the best to you in your future whether you’re playing softball or not.

Now, I’m sure players and fans are already looking ahead to next season. I know a few Hen Hud fans posted about the team once again being strong next season. I also think an Albertus Magnus fan said the same about the Falcons.

It is always fun to start projecting ahead. If I remember correctly, the ANNOYING Dick Vitale unveils his pre-season top 20 men’s basketball poll and final four a day or two after the men’s title game.

I am going to leave this up to the fans amd players. Let Erin and I know what you think about 2008?

Thanks again to all the bloggers for making this a fun season and thanks to Erin for being a great double-play softball partner.

Congrats to Hen Hud

June
9

I just wanted to say congratulations on an amazing season to Hen Hud. The Sailors lost to East Hampton, 4-1, earlier today in a Class A state semifinal game. It was their first-ever trip to the state final four.

East Hampton pitcher Jessie Stavola came as advertised, with tremedous velocity and a large repertoire of pitches, including a great rise ball. She had 15 strikeouts and allowed three hits.

Nicole Tamburri was awesome on the mound as always for the Sailors, striking out five. Two of East Hampton’s runs scored on just well-placed infield hits. Another scored on a bloop hit to shallow left. The Bonackers only hit one ball well off Tamburri all day, an RBI triple to right from Devin O’Brien in the seventh inning.

The score was 1-0 until the fifth with Kaylie Titus hitting an infield single just past third for a RBI in the first. They tacked on another run in the fifth on an infield single from Stavola.

But the Sailors pulled close in the bottom of the sixth, Jill Gallagher led off with a walk and then Jackie Gallagher came up with the big hit, lining a single to right to close to 2-1.

Jill Gallagher had smoked a ground-rule double to lead off the game in the first but it was unfortunate for Hen Hud that it did bounce over the fence because it easily was going to be at least a triple.

East Hampton then scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. East Hampton then lost in the final game, 1-0, to South Glens Falls in 10 innings.

But congrats to the Sailors who made school history with their first ever regional title, sectional title and first league title in 15 years. You girls represented Section 1 well at states!

The lowdown for tomorrow

June
8

Well I hope everyone is excited about Hen Hud’s trip to the state final four tomorrow. I know I am and am hoping the Sailors bring home the title.
I just wanted to give everyone the 411 on the games.
Hen Hud’s semifinal is at 11 a.m. against Section 11 champion East Hampton at BAGSAI field #2. Like I said before, what I know of East Hampton is that their pitcher, Jessie Stavola has 340 strikeouts so far this season, setting the Long Island single season record.
If the Sailors win that game, they will face the winner of No. 2 South Glens Falls and No. 5 Victor at 3:30 p.m. at BAGSAI field #3. Victor upset defending Class A state champion Williamsville South and No. 1 ranked team in the state, in their regional final.
I will be there, hope to see lots of you as well!
And any FYI, the All Section dinnner is on Tuesday, we will publish the list of All Section selections in the paper sometime next week then.

Great season Albertus Magnus

June
6

Albertus Magnus deserves a big hand, despite a 1-0 regional semi-final loss to Marlboro. Erin Flaherty was on her game once again, tossing a three-hitter and striking out three. Unfortunately, the Marlboro windmiller was equal to the task.

In her last three post-season games, Flaherty allowed two runs and seven hits.  Albertus Magnus had another solid game defensively also.

It’s a shame someone had to be eliminated in this game. Despite the loss, Albertus Magnus had a fantastics season and is probably already looking ahead to next year and defending its title.

Congratulations to all the girls, especially the five seniors – Meaghan Bradley, Nora Chivelly, Kayla Cornish, Kristen Trancynger and Marisa Zemsky, who will graduate with a sectional title.

Hen Hud to states!!

June
6

I will write more later but I just wanted to let everyone know that Hen Hud defeated Port Jervis, 4-0 to advance to their first state final four in school history. Nicole Tamburri pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk and the Sailors jumped on top with three runs in the first. Jackie Gallagher had some heads-up base running to score the first run and Heather Clausen brought home the other two with a double.
Gallagher added an RBI double in the fourth and had a great running catch in the game.
The Sailors had five errors which is quite unlike them but they came up clutch in the field when it counted, cutting down two runners at the plate and getting out of any jams. Shanna Brown and Jill Gallagher both had heads up plays to cut down runners at the plate and catcher Kirby Wright did a great job blocking the plate and making the tags.
They play East Hampton Saturday at 11 am at BAGSAI and I will be there!! A friend of mine from Newsday says the East Hampton pitcher is pretty nasty, with 340 strikeouts this year, setting a Long Island single season record.

I was at Minisink Valley with my colleague, Alex Myers who covered the Albertus Magnus game. Marlboro won 1-0 on a no-hitter from Shanna Hicks. Hicks had a great rise ball working and was double-digit in strikeouts. For Magnus, Erin Flaherty was great on the mound as well, tossing a three-hitter. Two of the hits were back-to-back that allowed the one run to score. Magnus’ defense was very good in the game, with the outfield tracking down a bunch of balls and turning them into outs.

Yorktown lost 5-2 to Binghamton and Dobbs Ferry lost 2-1 to Millbrook. For Yorktown, Kasey O’Connor hit yet another home run.. she has been nothing but clutch this postseason. My colleague, Tony Malakian, who covered the Dobbs Ferry game said it was indeed a very close play at the plate when Katie Martin was called out but she looked like she could have been safe.. it looked difficult for the catcher to have kept blocking the plate while getting the ball – although the Martin definitely beat the throw.
Did anyone else see it?

Regionals for tomorrow

June
5

I just wanted to update everyone on the schedule for tomorrow.

Class AA regional final
Yorktown vs. Binghamton (Section 4 champ) at BAGSAI complex, 3:30 p.m.
Dan Kiernan will be there to cover it.

Class A regional final
Hen Hud vs. Port Jervis (Section 9 champ) at Minisink Valley High School, 5:30 p.m.
I believe Port Jervis is the team Tappan Zee beat in the regional final last year.
I will be covering this game.

Class B regional semifinal
Postponed from today… Albertus Magnus plays Marlboro (section 9 champ) but note the location change, it is at Minisink Valley at 3:30 p.m.
Alex Myers will be covering this game.

Class C regional semifinal
Postponed from today… Dobbs Ferry plays Millbrook (section 9 champ) at Red Hook Recreation Park, 5:30 p.m.
Tony Malakian will be covering it.

Hope to see some fans at all the games!
And note.. if Magnus or Dobbs wins, they play in the regional final on Thursday at the Section8-Section 11 winner (Long Island). Winner of that then advances to the state final four at BAGSAI on Saturday.
Yorktown and Hen Hud would advance to the state final four on Saturday at BAGSAI.
