It’s time to play ball!

Welcome to Around the Bases, the Journal News’ softball blog. After doing the wrestling blog, Takedowns, in the recently-completed winter season, I am looking forward to sharing this blog with Erin, a former standout for Pleasantville coach Gina Perino.
I will be covering the Rockland softball beat after six years doing Westchester/Putnam softball. The Rockland coaches have been very receptive, which is a positive start, and the good thing is that many of them know me from my previous run as the Westchester/Putnam beat writer.
I am anxiously awaiting the season. Even though Clarkstown North’s Deanna Minuto and Tappan Zee’s Diana Perez, two outstanding windmillers, graduated and are playing in college, the Rams and Dutchies will still be strong sectional contenders in Class AA and Class A, respectively. Pearl River, perennial sectional finalists and/or champions will be a solid sectional contender, led by experienced and talented windmiller, Melissa Tarantino.
The season kicks off Wednesday at 10 a.m., weather-permitting, as Nanuet travels to Clarkstown South.
Thursday features a fine triple-header, also weather-permitting, at North Rockland, where coach Tony Toronto will host Carmel and Minisink Valley. Carmel and North Rockland meet at 11 a.m., followed by Carmel-Minisink Valley at 1 p.m. and Minisink Valley-North Rockland cap the day at 3 p.m. This is only the beginning of what should be a great season.
More importantly though, this blog is for the Section 1 players, coaches and fans to voice your thoughts and opinions. Remember, should you post, let’s keep it clean!

Could you at least smile in this picture? You don’t need that tough Mr. Wrestling face ALL the time do you?
Looking forward to the season in BOTH regions.
So we all got to see Erin’s report on the top 5 softball teams in the lower Hudson valley, great job.
Why didn’t any of the Rockland teams make it? or is there going to be a seperate top 5 for that area? Just curious.
Pinky’s Brain, that’s the top 5. There will no Rockland five.
Pinky’s Brain, that was a top five for all teams in Section 1 and included teams from Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties. Tappan Zee was No. 4.
It can be viewed on our web site if you go to the general sports page (not varsity central) and on the left scroll down and click on ‘latest videos’.
